As I move into my 50's I am more and more fascinated with WW2. Such an insane time in history it is hard to imagine as a child of the cold war. I recently watched this colorized footage documentary on Netflix and was just floored by the footage. Just sharing in case other people are fascinated with this devastating and bizarre period of recent history.

Watched the first episode last night…pretty amazing the collection of film they were able to compile to tell the stories.

The new one something like "from the front lines" was good too, had footage I hadn't seen before. If you already know the major events it's nice just to hear soldiers perspective.

I am going to check it out but from the previews it looked like a lot of footage that was already shown in "WWII IN HIGH DEF" narrated by Tom Hanks and a ton of other actors.

I think that is on Amazon.

on Youtube there are Capra documentaries and GEORGE STEVENS documentaries in color.

search for it.

that's the one I was referring to. I'm not familiar with the one OP mentioned.

There are 3 I think on Netflix that are made in the same style from what I remember . WW II in HD and road to victory are both great but similar. From the front lines is the new one.

I also liked Hitlers circle of evil, but doesn't use real footage as much and use live action actors in parts.

3 eps in…it's pretty incredible with all of the intense and touched up film. Never seen anything like it.

A lot of the footage is of footage we've all seen a 100 times, but they colorized it which makes it far more immersive. There is a video I have seen many times of a Japanese zero flying past a carrier, losing it's wing and then falling into the water. When it is in black and white it's just another video. But when it's in color it's "holy crap". It's weird how color makes things that much better.

There is another documentary called WW2 in Color, but it's not colorized B&W video, it's video that was originally filmed in color. However, most of the color footage is not of combat. It's just people walking around and doing stuff. My guess is that color cameras were way heavier and they couldn't be easily carried. This new documentary is way more immersive and interesting, IMO.

I just wish it wasn't so short. There is a lot of stuff they didn't cover. I suspect that as they colorize more and more old video (and do it better), we will see a lot more documentaries like this that get longer and longer.
