Burned through the third Crescent City book really fast. Part of that was wanting to get into it immediately after the surprises at the end of book 2, but it was also fast-paced from start to finish.

Also just got through the first 2 Scholomance books this week. Was a shift in writing style after reading the same author for the last few months, and the main character was a bit winey at first. I was still able to get into it fairly quickly though and sped through book 2 in just 2 days. I think it's technically considered YA, but it was a little darker than I thought it would be. The magic and the school setting were interesting though and even had some slight Kingkiller vibes at times. Moving onto the final book now.

I loved Scholomance! I remember having to adjust to her writing style. Such a strange story - in a good way. I think it's considered dark academia, even if YA, yeah.

I just finished Throne of Glass series; took me two weeks. Should I go right into Crescent City? I read a quick book today attempting to cleanse my palate for such intensity but I'm not sure it worked.

I haven't read the Throne of Glass books yet, just SJM's other books. As long as you have read the ACOTAR books first, I'd give Crescent City a shot.

Great book, I'm due for a reread. One of the few books I've read where the city it's set in is a character. I've always wanted to visit Savannah bc of that book

Question for the folks in this thread: Do you watch more movies or read more books in any given year?

Definitely more movies, unfortunately. My wife and I have movie night every Saturday night, so I'm watching about 1 movie per week.

With work and a 2 year old, free time is limited. During the week we watch an episode of whatever show we're currently watching, then get ready for bed and read until my eyes get too heavy (which doesn't take long) - I think I'm averaging a book/month right now. Granted I'm a slow reader and the book series I'm working on is about 1,000 pages/ book.

Unless you count children's books, like Brown Bear Brown Bear! In that case, I read like 12 books to my daughter just last night before bed

Never had anyone ask me that before. To be honest, I don't really ever compare the two in terms of how often I consume each. I read every day without fail and average about a book a week, but my movie intake varies on how much free time I have. I would guess that I watch more movies than read books though.

Ha! Let's not count children's books. I used to watch a lot of movies, but these days, I'm not sure I finish 12 whole movies per year, including full rewatches. I read about 30 books per year. I still watch a lot of TV shows on the streamers, just not that many feature length movies.

I read 3-4 books a month, but probably watch 1-2 movies a week on TV. Have to remember each book is 8+ hours where movies are about 2hrs so spend much more time reading.

I rarely watch movies anymore. Think this week I watched my first 2 movies of the year and it was because I was flying.

So I read/listen to more books.

I'd say on average I read a book a week and watch a movie probably once a month. Main contributor to that schedule (not including a full time job) is most evening are spent with the wife watching shows and sports on the weekend. Pretty standard balance. But as Marksman said, I do read nightly regardless of what I'm doing. That doesn't change.

Bout 2-3 movies a year. My reading has taken a massive hit last year or so but still averaging around 8-10 a month I say.

Though I will randomly binge a tv show from time to time to though. Last one was Justified a coupla months ago. Getting ready to plow through Masters of the Air this weekend I think. Then go screenless for another few months I imagine until something else randomly catches my eye. Seems to be the normal pacing these days.

Question for those reading 4-5+ books/month - How? How long are the books? How often and for how long are you reading? How many pages are you knocking out at a time? No hate - I'd love to get on that level, but I just can't wrap my head around it.

I get up between 4-4:30 every morning (M-F), gym by 5, home by 6:15, make breakfast/shower/get daughter up, at work by 7:30, work until 5:30-6, home by 6:15, help with daughter's dinner (she's 2), get daughter fed/bathed/put down for bed, sit down to eat our dinner by 7:45, watch an episode of tv while we eat (until around 8:45), wash dishes/clean up kitchen for about 20 min, get ready for bed, sitting in bed and opening book by 9:15, read for 30ish minutes (get about 20 pages in), asleep between 9:45-10, sleep for 6 hours....rinse and repeat.

Maybe I'm a slow reader? I'm reading A Song of Ice and Fire series now, so around 1,000 pages/book, but even if I'm reading a 300 page book, we're talking a couple of weeks at that rate.

What's the secret? Or am I just a dumb-dumb?

I try to read 30 - 40 pages per day, and I like shorter books (400 pages or less). Long novels tend to be more memorable, but I also sprinkle in several history and autobiographies that are shorter.

Also, in spite of trying to be a good reader, I'm sure I have some degree of ADHD, which is one of the reasons I started reading regularly.

Sometimes I look back at my reading list over the last few years and see novels that I remember almost nothing about.

I read every night before I go to sleep; it helps me unwind and relax. I generally read what I consider to be novels of a normal length(300-400 pages), and by reading around 50 pages(which probably takes me about 45 minutes) per day, I can finish the book in approximately a week.

I'll read anywhere from an hour to 2.5 hours a night starting at 8:30 pm. I am not a morning person and need my eight hours so work out at lunch (cardio) and then alternate cardio/weights after work. Then dinner and then shows with the wife until 8 pm at which times she hits the sack (she is a nurse and early riser).

You are not a dumb-dumb.

I have a similar schedule (sans 2 year old). I have bone conduction headphones and will listen to audiobooks on the way to gym, when out running errands or use regular earbuds while mowing or chores with either (pending on exterior noise levels). Book books I read before bed or (TMI) when on the pot. Generally, peck away at it little bit by little bit.

Audible helps some but I do the lion's share of listening/reading through Libby which is a free app associated with local libraries ( I have access to B/CS, Houston Public and Harris County which has given me a ton of books to get through).

I definitely watch more movies but this is the most I've read in a single year maybe ever. I'm on my 35th and 36th book right now.

I have a book on my bedside table that I read at night. Its typically a shorter book or collection of stories that I can jump in and out of. Aside from that I use audible any time I am driving, doing yardwork, cleaning up around the house, etc. Even though I work from home, I still manage to get through a lot of books with most of them being around 10-12 hours long.

You have a more disciplined schedule than most, I'd say. And you're better for it. Not a dumb-dumb whatsoever. You're probably not even a slow reader.

I read every single day. Some days it's 20 minutes but most days it's at least 2 hours. It's my favorite hobby.

Thanks - sometimes I feel like I'm burning through a book, then I check in on this thread and most of you guys seem like you've read more this year than I have in my whole life...

When you said a few posts up that you knocked out the Throne of Glass series in 2 weeks, I was floored lol - my wife is on the second book of that series and I think she knocked out the first one in a little over a week

Either way, I love reading and just wish I had more time for it - I go to B&N or Half Priced Books and make mental notes of everything I want to read, but know I'll likely never get to bc there are so many unread books on my shelf...I also love hearing about all the things you guys are reading!

Maybe one day I'll get to retire, in the meantime I'll keep trying to keep up with you guys

I can typically read about an hour or so at work (kindle screen on my work computer) and at least an hour to 2 hours at home. I record every Astros game so i read and then watch some of the game and then keep reading... Not having any kids really makes it easier to get a lot of reading in...

Where does the Elon Musk biography end? Been thinking of that one.

See you read "The Alienist", really enjoyed, but his other books not as good.

See you started the Harry Hole series. Have enjoyed and finally got caught up.

i think the Musk book ends after he buys Twitter, and the changes he makes. Talks about him switching / moving all of the servers from one location to another and basically doing it with his cousin and a few others. Definitely worth reading and i think its on Kindle Unlimited right now.
I need to get back on the Harry Hole Series, or at lest read The Snowman book. i heard that one was solid.
