Caught an advanced screening yesterday and it was good stuff.
Riveting, I know.

While not for everyone, the book is excellent. Excited about this film.
I loved it but it is not a quick read. I could be wrong but I believe many would quickly get bored with a 400 page book about what is today is a niche sport.BassCowboy33 said:jkag89 said:

Honestly, I think this is a book for everyone. Like, what group of people is this book not for? The illiterate?

I said niche not unknown to all expect those who actually play it and those of us that regularly do crossword puzzles.Sea Speed said:jkag89 said:I loved it but it is not a quick read. I dunno, man. It's one of a very small list of books I've started and finished in less than 24 hours. The Boys in the Boat, The Firm, and Holes.jkag89 said:I loved it but it is not a quick read. I with with you on just how great of a book The Boys in the Boat is. And based on your excellent taste, I'll have to check out Lords of the Realm.BassCowboy33 said:I dunno, man. I consider it the best narrative sports history book ever written and second best sports history behind only Lords of the Realm.
Lords is a very heavy read. Literally plods through 100+ years of baseball history to explain how the MLBPA became the most powerful union in America. If you want to fully understand how a 4th outfielder makes more than an NFL QB, this is your book.Zona81 said:I with with you on just how great of a book The Boys in the Boat is. I'd have to think about my list of best sports history books other than The Boys in the Boat, but Seabiscuit and The Boys of Summer immediately come to mind. If mountain climbing is a sport, Into Thin Air would be on my list. If historical novels count The Celebrant and Shoeless Joe for sure would be on there.

Mad Men for me
The guy who wrote Lords of the Realm also wrote a gripping (seriously) history of the RJR Nabisco leveraged buyout in the 1980s.BassCowboy33 said:Lords is a very heavy read. To be fair, the elite QBs of the NFL will make more money a season than anyone in baseball not not name Shohei Ohtani.Quote:
