Sean Bean is a great, great mention. Was he brought up before? High profile stuff in both categories.

Villain:
Alec (Goldeneye)
Howe (National Treasure)
Sean Miller (Patriot Games)

Hero:
Ned Stark
Boromir
Odysseus (Troy)

Can't recall Ronin, was he a bad guy or good guy in that? Or both?

Joaquin Phoenix has a pretty diverse resume. Commodus is probably a 1 seed in the all time villain bracket, then has Jack Morrison in Ladder 49, Johnny Cash, and whatever his character's name was in Signs on the protagonist side.

How about John Travolta for worse heroes and worst villains?
Ghost of Andrew Eaton

Robin Williams-

He was really good in Insomnia and One Hour Photo.

Kevin Costner in Mr. Brooks was really good but not a traditional villain.
If you say you hate the state of politics in this nation and you don't get involved in it, you obviously don't hate the state of politics in this nation.

I think Patrick Swayze deserves a mention for Point Break - fantastic villain/antagonist character that was a significant change from the "complicated but good hearted" roles he became known for in The Outsiders, North and South, Dirty Dancing, Roadhouse, Ghost, etc.

Denzel for Training Day and American Gangster as well.

Jack Nicholson seems like an obvious one that hasn't been mentioned yet, that chaotic energy he has can be channeled a lot of different ways.

Burt Lancaster is another one, had lots of good performances as a leading man but his role in Sweet Smell of Success was one of the most intimidating characters I've ever seen.

Some others that come to mind:
-Ralph Fiennes
-Chris Cooper
-Michael Fassbender

Tom Hanks
Has he played a truly evil adversary type?

He was a "bad guy" in Road to Perdition, but it was a life he was stuck in and he was doing what he had to do to protect his son - still kind of a Tom Hanks everyman even in that role.
Big - screwed a businessman out of a promotion and baited a lady into statutory by hiding his true age.

Joe Pesci - villain in all his mob movies but also hero in My Cousin Vinny, Lethal Weapon 2
Michael Douglas was pretty good at being a hero (Romancing the Stone) and villain (Wall Street), among others
Brian Earl Spilner

Don't forget Home Alone 1-2 for Pesci. Probably the biggest reason they're so beloved besides Macaulay Culkin.

His scream when he gets shot with the rifle gets me every damn time, and I've seen the movie probably upwards of 50 times.

Also, I realize I've been posting on this thread from a drama/comedy perspective rather than a hero/villain perspective, but in my opinion the former is far more impressive.

Adam Scott is a great example of both the drama/comedy swap as well as hero vs. villain.

First one that comes to mind is John Carrol Lynch. Serious bipolarity.

Creepy, stone cold killer in Gothika and Zodiac. Also the loveable husband in Fargo & brother in the Founder. Even looking at this photo...I can see both sides of him in it.
