A new Christmas classic.

For me, at least, as it's going in my holiday rotation from here on out.

I saw it tonight, with a sold out audience at the Alamo Drafthouse, who seemed as into as I was. It's just so damn good, and funny, and heartwarming. Basically, think The Breakfast Club if Vice Principal Vernon were Ebenezer Scrooge. With a side of Good Will Hunting and a dash of Dead Poets Society.

It takes place over the two-week holiday break, from 1970 to 1971, and every last frame, from the opening titles/studio cards, feels like something that was actually shot in the early '70s; like some long lost gem from that era, featuring a cast of mostly unknowns (save for Giamatti), and a subtly great soundtrack too. It's from Alexander Payne, the writer/director of Election, Sideways, The Descendants, and Nebraska, told with his usual wit and humor, but with an added heart and soul I didn't know he was cable of.

It's rated R for language, so I wouldn't advise taking the kids, but it's definitely a movie the rest of the family will enjoy, and I can't recommend it enough. In fact, with a 96% Rotten Tomato score, it's the perfect movie to see over Thanksgiving with the family. It came out in limited release last weekend, but goes wide next weekend, on November 10, and I hope it plays all holiday season long...

Just scrolled past a couple glowing reactions, so I figured I'd post a few here, in case anyone's still on the fence...

I'm so pumped for this and was hoping it would be a "Christmas" movie. Glad to hear your reviews that it's going on your rotation.

Can't wait to see it

Reminder that this finally releases wide tonight. And while it's not a WIDE wide release (as in 3000+) screens, it's at least now playing in cities like College Station (but not in my hometown for some reason, which is only slightly smaller.)

Regardless, if you can, SEE THIS MOVIE.

Great film and I loved how it looked like an actual 70's movie. I'm looking forward to watching this again at Christmas, and reiterating the soundtrack is fantastic.

Hope more go check it out and it gets some nice legs over the holidays.

Saw this in CS last week. Just another great Alexander Payne movie.

We're doing a marathon of Payne films. We started with Election, one we had never seen. We'll be rewatching these:

About Schmidt
The Descendants
Sideways (Did you drink and dial?)
Nebraska

I like Payne movies and this looks good. I am just not sure I can handle PG for two hours with his over-acting. Even after a few lines it becomes impossible to watch much of the time. Unless he finally toned it down here?

If you're not a fan of Paul Giamatti, you probably shouldn't see movies that star him.

That being said, I love him, and thought it was the best he's ever been.

I saw this in a sold out (5 row) Alamo Drafthouse in Austin on Friday evening, and then took my parents to Evo in Kyle to see it again on Saturday, which was probably 1/3 full for the 3pm showing. (side note - Evo Kyle has a banner up saying Imax is coming soon. I believe that will be the 4th Imax theater in Central Texas)

Needless to say, I loved this one... enough to see again on back to back days. It was exactly what I was hoping it would be after reading TC's buzz when he started this thread.

All of the performances hit the spot. I was surprised to learn this was the first role for the actor playing Angus. Was moved to tears several times, particularly when it came to Mary's journey.

Looking forward to seeing this and probably will, but damn, this is one I really wish I hadn't seen the trailer for several times. I feel like I already understand the plot and characters in their entirety.

I hear you, and you're not wrong, but there's a lot more to the movie itself. A couple of good twists and turns, they leave the campus for a decent chunk, etc.

I wish Focus Features would have let this play exclusively in theaters for another few weeks, but it's now officially available to rent digitally for $19.99...

I cannot believe that the "tw*t" in "JustW*tch" registers under the profanity filter, and even redacts an embedded link. Seriously, TexAgs?

Giamatti rarely disappoints and this was no exception. Really good movie.

Saw this last night and damn do I love me a movie that captures the inevitable melancholia of the holiday season. I knew from the opening sequence that I was going to love this movie and it did not disappoint.

I genuinely loved this movie. Giamatti was great and I really loved the overall feel of the movie. What I especially enjoyed was that every time that I thought that the movie was about to descend into a common comedy/drama film trope, the film pulled back from it and seemed to say, "nope, that's not the movie that you are getting".

So this is a Christmas flick?
TCTTS

While it's not necessarily a movie *about* Christmas, it does take place over Christmas break, features a scene at a Christmas party, shows a character setting up a Christmas tree, has scenes set on Christmas Day, shows characters exchanging Christmas gifts, and there are multiple Christmas songs on the soundtrack. All while Paul Giamatti essentially plays the Ebenezer Scrooge version of a cranky prep school teacher.

Caught this one in the theater today and I'm really glad I saw it on a big screen. The '70s film look (which I assume was done in post) really added to the ambiance of the film.

just saw it.

kind of speechless at the moment but will try.

one of my all time favorite movies is the Descendants. can't really explain why either. This is that same feeling, but this one is better.

it's akin to a less whimsical Wes Anderson movie (judgement may be clouded because of the prep school angle), but it just has a vibe. the setting and cinematography are perfect.

The gal who played Mary deserves the oscar in supporting actress category and will probably win it. the kid who plays angus deserves best supporting actor, and Giamatti deserves the best actor. in a just world this deserves best film. i haven't seen anything close this year. Not sure this will happen but at least i said it.

soundtrack is perfect.

this one is flawless. i remember watching it and dreading the fact that it had to end. it has no low spots.

i said earlier in the thread that Payne holds 2 spots in my top 10 of all time. one with Election and one with the Descendants. this surpassed both. this may be in my top 5 of all time.

thanks again for the heads up tctts
