My list of scariest movies:

Alien
The Exorcist
Poltergeist (original)
Paranormal Activity
The Shining
The Fog (original)

Others:

Halloween (original)
The Thing From Another World
John Carpenter's The Thing
The Changeling (1980)
The Amityville Horror (1979)
It (original and 2-part remakes)
Salem's Lot (original TV miniseries)
Event Horizon
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original but also the 1978 remake)

Note that all but one of these is relatively ancient; I just don't watch too many of these type of movies these days.

Event Horizon for sure. The Black Hole was scary as F when I was a kid, but I have no idea if it would hold up as a rewatch.

In the Mouth of Madness would be another one.

Been watching scary movies with the wife every night in October like we usually do. We've been watching all the Friday the 13th this year. But my favorites that we watch every year:
1. Cabin in the woods
2. Trick R Treat (on HBO max - it is fantastic)
3. Tucker and Dale (hilarious)
4. Drag me to Hell

Oculus is very good. I'm somewhat of a horror movie nut and I've seen most of them, but Oculus is in my top 10. Skeleton Key while not a horror film technically, is very good and has horror elements. Hereditary is excellent as well. Really liked It Follows as well.

John Carpenters The Thing

Watch it every Halloween. The original can't touch it and neither can the second remake.

Wilford Brimley was 47 in this movie.

I first watched The Thing From Another World on late night TV when I was 11 or 12. Saw the listing in TV Guide, thought it was a Godzilla movie, and turned to that station (on an old TV with a rotary dial). Under those conditions, that movie scared the crap out of me.

But you are correct, that version does not hold a candle to Carpenter's movie. I enjoyed the prequel but there was nothing frightening about it, other than comparing the CGI against the real effects in the 1982 movie.

The 1982 The Thing is not particularly scary in the way that Alien is, but where it scares is in the psychological area. You really feel the isolation of these men, and the growing distrust as you wonder who has been taken over.

I watched Trick r Treat last night for the first time and it was great. It's like a rated R Hocus Pocus and maybe the most Halloween movie ever.

Yep, and I think the FX are still just awesome and add a level of horror that CGI never would. The dog kennel scene still gets me worked up even though I've seen this move damn near as much as I've seen Star Wars.

IMO, it's the best horror (sci-fi) movie ever made and in my top five overall movies.

Carpenter had the greatest run of horror movies ever and I would argue one of the greatest runs of all time.

For me, Alien defined the monster movie genre. I have that one in my top 5 overall. The Thing is not too far behind given my lifelong love of monster movies (I've probably seen them all at some point, and many are absolute garbage).

Carpenter's run from Halloween to Big Trouble in Little China was greatness, although in that run were a couple that I'd consider meh at best (Christine and Starman). But there's no denying Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China. The only other similar run I can think of comes from a similar time frame with Spielberg going from Jaws to Schindler's List (but even he had a clunker based on his own statements and popular opinion (I don't agree) with 1941, and then there's The Color Purple that I have never seen, nor will I ever watch it, not at all my kind of movie).

Gina Gershon is an all-timer. Jesse Spano also isn't bad at all.

Just ignore the acting and pretend it is a comedy.
