I first watched The Thing From Another World on late night TV when I was 11 or 12. Saw the listing in TV Guide, thought it was a Godzilla movie, and turned to that station (on an old TV with a rotary dial). Under those conditions, that movie scared the crap out of me.YouBet said:
John Carpenters The Thing
Watch it every Halloween. The original can't touch it and neither can the second remake.
Wilford Brimley was 47 in this movie.

But you are correct, that version does not hold a candle to Carpenter's movie. I enjoyed the prequel but there was nothing frightening about it, other than comparing the CGI against the real effects in the 1982 movie.
The 1982 The Thing is not particularly scary in the way that Alien is, but where it scares is in the psychological area. You really feel the isolation of these men, and the growing distrust as you wonder who has been taken over.
For me, Alien defined the monster movie genre. I have that one in my top 5 overall. The Thing is not too far behind given my lifelong love of monster movies (I've probably seen them all at some point, and many are absolute garbage).YouBet said:Cinco Ranch Aggie said:I first watched The Thing From Another World on late night TV when I was 11 or 12. Yep, and I think the FX are still just awesome and add a level of horror that CGI never would. The dog kennel scene still gets me worked up even though I've seen this move damn near as much as I've seen Star Wars.
IMO, it's the best horror (sci-fi) movie ever made and in my top five overall movies.
Carpenter had the greatest run of horror movies ever and I would argue one of the greatest runs of all time.

Gina Gershon is an all-timer. Jesse Spano also isn't bad at all.Brian Earl Spilner said:Carlo4 said:
