A companion piece to the other thread, because I immediately started thinking of films that tried a twist and it just didn't work.

Biggest one for me was The Village. Went into it expecting a twist and praying it wasn't that they were actually in the present. Don't think I've seen an M. Night film since and don't seem to have missed much.

Lady in the Water was Shamalan's worst twist imo.

Sometimes I wonder if a movies would be bigger twists by not having a twist at all. Like if they just totally telegraphed the ending from the beginning, and then ended exactly the way everyone expects. It would blow people's minds.

Signs with water burning the Martians.

Why would you invade somewhere were it rains what is effectively acid without some sort of protection?

Signs is a better movie if you don't look at it as an alien invasion movie, but more of a movie about how someone regains his faith, and makes you question whether things happen for a reason or if everything is a coincidence. If you look at the aliens just as a plot device, it is a better movie.

It's a metaphor for holy water.

Signs is a great movie.

This thread should just be renamed "Which M. Night Shyamalan movie do you hate the most."

I'll +1 Signs. Not only did the aliens invade a planet with effectively acid rain with no protection, shouldn't the humidity have been constantly eating away at their skin?

Pick any other liquid as their weakness and it becomes a far less idiotic movie. I can't believe they stuck with water.

I'll also add that 3/4 of the planet is covered by water.
Great intel from their scouting party.

Why did they make a metaphor about a Soundgarden song?

War of the Worlds, they had superior firepower and probably had superior intelligence, but they do not know about immunization?
Zombie Jon Snow

Two big ones I have not seen mentioned

Planet of the Apes (2001) - the remake was just bad and then Aperaham Lincoln.... NO!!!!!!!

The Girl on the Train - ugh just awful

To be fair, that was the ending of the original book. It was high tech at the time, when germ theory was still pretty new. You could argue that regardless of how prepared the aliens were, there could easily be a bacteria or virus they simply did know know about.
Bruce Almighty

I'll go tv shows and add BSG. Great show, awful ending with dumb twist.

Signs is part of a trilogy. It should be looked at in that context…

Worst twist of the sequel trilogy was when Luke tossed the light saber.

High Tension
Martyrs

Bad run for French horror flicks and twists, although the gore was over the top in a good way in both. 2nd one had an American remake that was much worse.

Mr President Elect

The Forgotten. Spent the whole movie trying to figure out the twist, only for aliens to come out of nowhere as the surprise ending
