I saw this preview today while taking my kids to the new Paw Patrol movie.

Nothing objectionable, but for the life of me I had no idea what the plot or the struggle in this movie could be.

My wife and I agreed that it looked like a movie that if you asked ChatGPT to come up with a new script based on all other Disney movies ever made: this would be the result.

It has multiple nationalities in it, stereotypical struggle against parents and a cute character that accompanies the princess.

It just seemed all over the place from the preview. Anyone have any insight on this film that would help us understand what makes it unique?

This movie plays on the "when you wish upon a star" theme that Disney loves. It's about a girl, Asha (meaning "wish, hope, desire"), who is invited to apprentice under a magic king who grants wishes to his people. The king creates order, law, stability, and peace. But then Asha learns that the king only grants the most important wishes, which seems unfair - why would an all-powerful king who claims to love all his people withhold his power and mercy from some of his citizens? She wonders, is this even a good king?

We see snippets of the king's vanity. The people around him adore him, even worship him,, but Asha has discovered that he is actually a villain, at least in her interpretation.

Instead, Asha will have to flee society - that ordered realm of the god-king, and reconnect with Gaia, Mother Earth, that cosmic force that will grant her the power to become her own goddess with literal star power. With this power, she will return to overthrow the patriarch king and free the people from the shackles of his rules in order to end oppression and grant everyone's desires.

So she isn't the daughter of the white king and darker complected queen? That's what I gathered from the preview.

joking aside, it looks like lazy storytelling. I mean, the idea of freeing up and giving everyone their wishes is a neat concept, but you know what you get when you give everyone all their wishes?

Complete and utter anarchy and chaos.

even if every wish is benevolent (in reality they would not be) the end results would still create huge inequities depending on the respective wishes.

hopefully the songs are at least decent; The art direction looks decent but Disney is in a bit of a rut there. Wish (HA!) they would try some slightly different art styles than what they have settled on for the last 5 or so movies.

I actually enjoy the art style which looked like cell shaded style initially.

Probably not. Given human nature, there is going to be someone among the population who's wish will be ultimate, dictatorial control over all others. That guy ain't gonna put up with utter anarchy and chaos. He'll just put it down.

There would be more than one trying to be dictator over the world. Then what?

The premise of the movie is extra idiotic.

There's nothing worse than when animated movies about princesses and magic don't consider the logic of their wish magic.

Never saw the movie because it looks silly, and I no longer have any kids with a desire to see movies like this.

As for the multiple dictators thing, you're right about that. Then you get to the point of who swings the biggest dick with a "best" result of something like The Man in the High Castle.

Can we make a requirement that you need to post your age along with commenting on the trailer of a...checks notes....disney kids movie? Just so we know how important it is to each 27 year old, or 45 year old, etc. that Disney does right by what they think and want to gatekeep about...checks notes again....kids animated movies.

Considering parents would be the one actually spending money to see things like this I think they generslly have room for input on things like kids entertainment. Sure they have to appeal to kids but parents have to agree to pay for the entertainment.

Disney's animated movies have NEVER been intended solely for children.

Family-friendly, yes. But the themes and content have always been more universal.

Sounds like it's not Disney's film adaptation of Nine Inch Nails 1992 classic 'wish' off the broken album as I first hoped when I opened this thread.

Yeah! Since when have adults been the gatekeepers for children's entertainment?

They should've based this movie on the Skee-Lo song.

Didn't this happen in Bruce Almighty when he replied yes to all the prayer emails?

Sounds almost like the magic kingdom version of communism. When everyone gets the same thing, no one gets anything.

More like Asherah. Tale as old as time.

If there's one thing I've learned about really intelligent people, it's that's they constantly need to point out how smart they are.

Oh wait, they actually don't.
