Whomever thought killing the Big 3 from the originals is a moron. I know Carrie died.
That's been the disney way for lucasfilm products. Sell the concept on the backs of the legacy characters, then have the new characters you want to promote show how dumb, incompetent, and out of touch the legacy characters are.

The Last Jedi definitely needed more

I remember sitting in the theater and when I saw this scene the first time a small part of me died.

They did the reverse for Infinity War... but then went right back to it in Endgame.

I seem to recall that in the ST (which I typically don't rewatch as I do the other trilogies) that the resistance was an off-shoot of the new Republic with basically no funding or support. They couldn't be picky about the ships they could throw at the first order.

This was one of the dumber plot points. How would there not be a New Republic military?
The entirety of the movie doesn't make sense from a plot point of view after Force Awakens. Nothing is established, is the First Order the dominate military in the galaxy? Where is everyone else in the galaxy? Coruscant was not one of the planets destroyed from star killer base so that means the core worlds are still there so there has to be a massive military force that is non-first order.

Why is the resistance running way all of a sudden, since this movie starts immediately after the previous one? They just destroyed a planet full of first order troops and infrastructure, which was a shadowy organization, but they seemed to be able to shrug it off and suddenly have ships that can one shot other ships out of no where. Why would you need the star killer base if you had those ships?

Hell they make a big deal about how Poe is overstepping his grounds in a freaking resistance organization that has no formal military structure. Why wouldn't you tell him the plan? Why wouldn't you involve him in planning overall while you're being hunted down with no apparent means of escape? There is no military discipline here, this is all just a strung together group based on common principles the purple dress coffee barista would have destroyed the resistance all by herself before Leia woke back up if Snoke left them alone.

I like Rian Johnson as a director, but he didn't take anything from the defined parameters of the Star Wars universe into his movie. There is no continuity with story, technology, military tactics, politics, or even defined physics from previous movies.

As others said, there should have been more focus on the jedi academy, ben's decent into darkness, Luke's really odd and unexplainable attempt to murder the boy in his sleep, the foundation of the knights of Ren, the fall of the academy, and then the continued training of Rey as the kind of pointless resistance keeps fighting the good fight against the First Order. Maybe expand more into Leia and her trying to fix the republic after it was thrown into chaos after she took the chancellor role (defined in the novels) when it was leaked that Darth Vader (mass murder) was her father.

And then you have the culmination of Luke, Kylo, and the Knights of Ren battling over Rey and her training

I recently watched the newest Scream movie, and they have a very meta scene talking about this very concept.

Decided to have Chat GPT rewrite this for us:

Title: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Act 1: Present Time
The Resistance, led by Leia, is on the run from the First Order, struggling to stay one step ahead. Finn and Poe aid her in these daring escapes, evading the clutches of General Hux and the relentless Captain Phasma. Leia witnesses Finn's unexplained Force abilities, which puzzle him and intrigue Leia. Meanwhile, Luke grapples with the pain of losing Han Solo and the guilt over what happened with his nephew, Ben Solo/Kylo Ren. Finally, he agrees to train Rey, who has arrived seeking his guidance. At the same time, Kylo undergoes intense training under the mysterious Supreme Leader Snoke.

Act 2: Present Time
Snoke exerts immense pressure on Hux and Phasma to locate Skywalker and "the girl," Rey. They turn to the formidable bounty hunter Zorri, who agrees to track them down. While in hiding, Leia confronts Finn about his growing connection to the Force. Though he cannot explain it, Leia senses a deeper truth. Poe, in a bid to rally support from neutral planets, encounters his former lover, Zorri. Their unresolved feelings complicate Zorri's loyalties, leading her to betray Poe by revealing Skywalker's location to Phasma and Hux. Finn intervenes to stop them, but Phasma overpowers him, leaving him near death. Leia's own latent Force abilities enable her to save Finn at the last moment. Heartbroken, Poe watches as Zorri departs with the enemy.

Act 2: Past Time
In the past, the film explores Ben Solo's upbringing and training with Luke. Much like his grandfather, Anakin Skywalker, Ben is drawn to the dark side of the Force. Both Luke and Leia sense this darkness growing within him, but Han remains in denial. Additionally, the film delves into Snoke's origin as a powerful Force user once affiliated with the Church of the Force. However, his desire for more power led him to the Dark Side, causing a conflict with the Whills, being banished into a twisted, mutilated form. Cast out, Snoke rose to prominence in the Unknown Regions, eventually forming the Supremacy to seize control of the galaxy. He set his sights on Ben Solo as a vessel for his sinister ambitions.

Act 3: Present Time
Captain Phasma, armed with Skywalker's location, dispatches Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren to ambush Luke on his secluded island. An intense lightsaber duel ensues between Kylo and Luke, showcasing their extraordinary Force abilities. Simultaneously, Rey faces off against the Knights of Ren. Interspersed with the battle scenes, we see Leia training Finn, highlighting their parallel journeys. Rey is eventually captured, and Kylo takes her back to Snoke aboard the main ship, where General Hux is stationed.

Act 3: Past Time
In the past, Snoke finally reveals himself to Ben, exploiting the young man's inner conflict and luring him to the dark side. Han realizes too late that Ben is in dire need of help, while Luke struggles to intervene. Ultimately, Ben succumbs to Snoke's persuasion, adopting the identity of Kylo Ren, and the Knights of Ren pledge their allegiance to their new master. Leia's grief-fueled Force rage blames Luke and Han for Ben's fall. Luke, burdened by the loss, leaves for the remote island. Han departs with Chewbacca, torn on what to do.

The movie concludes in the present time with Luke seeking revenge and regaining the strength of his allies. He raises his X-wing from the depths of the water, ready to join Leia in the fight against the dark side. The film ends as he jumps to light speed, determined to confront the sinister forces and protect the ones he loves.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi presents a parallel drama akin to The Godfather II, skillfully interweaving the past and present to explore the characters' complex emotions and motivations.
