Thread dedicated to The Clash. Unfortunately I was born past my time and didn't get to appreciate them when they were still active, but I've gone through their catalogue several times in the last few months and enjoy them more and more. So much more than "punk." Rock, punk, blues, reggae elements. Strummer was one of the coolest frontmen ever, and w/out Mick Jones taking his turn co-singing they wouldn't have been the band they were.

Anyway, these are my 10 (current) favorites. I won't apologize for including their hits. London Calling is one of the best songs (and albums) of the last 50 years.

London Calling

Magnificent Seven

Train in Vain

Janie Jones

Lost in the Supermarket

Police on My Back

Should I Stay or Should I Go

Spanish Bombs

Charlie Don't Surf

I like the Clash alright. The fact that OP had to acknowledge NOT apologizing for recognizing the hits is noteworthy. Is that punk rock, music snob, mainstream acceptance, or some kind of anti-hipster posture?

Haha. I know. People don't want to admit that Stairway is their favorite Zeppelin song or Teen Spirit for Nirvana.
Hits are hits for a reason and The Clash's hits are bad@ss songs.

Btw, Zeppelin is my favorite band of all time. The OP title is in reference to the moniker given to/earned by The Clash during their heyday. I haven't really looked into its origins.

I'm one of those people who need to listen to anything of theirs that wasn't on the radio because their hits annoy the **** out of me.

I bet I find something on the B side that I love.

Stairway isn't my favorite, but it's in my top 10. Fans who claim to dislike it are just being hipsters. It's a classic for a reason.

I don't dislike it at all but I'm not sure it makes my top 10 favorite Zep songs. But in the same breath I'll argue that it's the greatest rock song of all time. Two different arguments IMO.

"Train in Vain" is the #1 song on my list of songs that I never ever seek out or have pop in my head but when it comes on the radio randomly, I am always glad to hear it and it always makes my day better.

I'm a big Clash fan. Some of my favorites are as follows:
- Garageland
- Janie Jones
- Wrong 'Em Boyo
- Red Angel Dragnet
- Straight to Hell
- Career Opportunities
- Safe European Home
- I'm So Bored With the USA

Lots of excellent Clash songs out there. Unfortunately Should I Stay…, Rock the Casbah, I Fought the Law all get played too much as if these were the only songs the Clash made. There are way better songs than the ones too commonly played (although Train In Vain is an excellent tune). Another one I really like is the instrumental off of "Black Market Clash" - Time is Tight!

Enjoy!

I believe it was named Spin's album of the decade when it came out. I love the album, but do not like the song London Calling at all.

For Strummer fans, the song off the Sid and Nancy soundtrack is excellent as well.

Of course. Just so happens to be an opinion shared by pretty much everyone who's anyone in rock.
I'd venture a guess that every one of your musical idols would tell you just how brilliant that album is and extol it's place in the pantheon of rock and roll.

Look up the spat between Van Halen and The Clash at the US Festival

The biggest band in the world at the time didn't think much of The Clash

That's cute.

Spoiler alert: The Clash weren't happy with The Clash that day either. They broke up after the show.

Now that you've gotten your completely irrelevant comment out of the way, would you like to address the point about London Calling?
maroon barchetta
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sure

I do not find the music of The Clash to be entertaining. Having been a teen when they were in their heyday, and seeing all of the kids that were basically hipsters of the time jump onto the punk and new wave movement so they could be different and get attention, they seemed like a passing fad.
