Miles Davis - Kind of Blue is one of the best albums ever made

Yep that's one of the few I do have on vinyl

My introduction to jazz came from the stage band at school, which I joined as a sophomore and continued through senior year. We had the opportunity to hear the UNT One O'Clock Lab Band and a number of other college jazz bands at festivals we attended.

I don't know if stage band is still a thing at a lot of schools. My kids' high school did not have one, although it had a fantastic band program. I think the focus on UIL marching competition in the fall has killed a lot of high school jazz programs.
My dad was in the One O' Clock Lab Band. He played at the White House for LBJ.

So obviously, I was exposed to jazz early and often. Love it. Saw all the greats in concert.

My dad passed a few years ago and he had a huge storeroom full of vinyl, mostly jazz and big band. Originals from when he was in high school and college. Now they are mine.

I loved HS jazz band too. We went to state in Austin all four years (we had an exceptional sax player, I held my own on trumpet). Great trips and great experience.

Listen to jazz every day of the week. Primarily compositions from the golden age (50s and 60s), so be-bop, modal, hard-bop, and post be-bop.

I listen to Soma FM Groove Salad a lot and it has some pretty good electro jazz that is chill. If I smoked weed, I'd listen a lot more.

Rhapsody in Blue is one of my top 5 pieces of music. While not the jazz I think most are referring to here, it is my flavor.

My son plays in a jazz band at his middle school and will be doing the HS jazz band next year as well. So it is still a thing.

I played in Jazz Band from 7-12 grades. Our high school Jazz Band was number 1 in the nation for about 5 or 6 years in the late 70's and early 80's. My sophomore year in high school we traveled to Paris, France to attend the Paris Jazz Festival. My senior year we performed with Ashley Alexander along with the UTEP Jazz Band. I love big band Jazz music, Maynard Fergusen, and Chuck Mangione. My favorite Chuck Mangione tune is The Children of Sanchez.

That's good to know. Stage band was very influential/popular back in the day; it would be a shame for it to disappear.

Wow ... that's impressive. That was my time frame, too. We didn't go to Paris but we did go to Sealy and Arlington. LOL

"Children of Sanchez" is awesome.

I'm a big jazz listener. Jazz is still being created today, but it's certainly not prominent. Here are some of my favorites around today, off the top of my head.

Robert Glasper-Houston native went to HSPVA, plays traditional jazz and modern r&b, grammy winner
GoGo Penguin - UK, edm based rhythms, they swapped out the drummer and I like the older one better
Mammal Hands - UK, unique sax sounds
Hiromi- Japanese pianist, listen to Brain album
Christian Scott- powerful New Orleans trumpeter, he's really, really good
Alfa Mist - UK keyboardist, electronic style
Brad Mehldau - been around awhile, mostly piano trio but has some electronic
Aaron Parks - creative piano, from Seattle
3IO / Robert Mitchell - UK stuff, not sure if he's still recording
Avashai Cohen - 2 people with this name, both from Israel, one on trumpet & one on bass; I like them both
Marcin Wasilewski - Polish pianist, creative stuff
Mike Moreno guitar & Kendrick Scott drums - both from Houston & HSPVA, not big but they deserve support

Miles
Lee Morgan
Freddie Hubbard
Dizzy
Roy Hargrove
Art Blakey/Jazz Messengers
Horace Silver

Love Children of Sanchez, but this is my favorite. The slow build to the trumpet chorus...

We have similar tastes - start with that list, throw in my current list above, plus 70's (Crusaders, Lonnie Liston Smith etc.) then add Pharaoh Sanders (one of my favorites) and you're approaching my streaming list.

I lean heavy these days on Hard Bop. But throughout the decades I've enjoyed just about every style of jazz. Growing up, my family (including James' mother) listened to a lot of Grover Washington Jr., David Sanborn, Bob James, and Chuck Mangione.

*edited to include Chuck Mangione

I like this. while not a traditional 12 bar or call and response style I would still put this closer to blues than to jazz. Good stuff!

I haven't seen any mention of the "ultimate" '60s cool jazz, at least for me, but check out some of the bossa nova cats. Talk about cool grooves, with great chord changes and voicings! Jobim kinda led the charge, and Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 introduced it to a whole new market in the U.S.

We did too. I loved any excuse for one of our talented woodwinds to bust out the jazz flute.

I also remember how cool the jazz band Christmas concert was. Great arrangements of Christmas songs and we usually brought in a silky singer or 2 to join.

I love that illustration - 50 yrs ago my girlfriend's mother was opening a dress shop in Rockport and asked me to design a logo with a cat involved, wish I had done that elongated kitty.

I am originally from El Paso, Texas. We also played a couple of Hispanic themed songs. Two of my favorites were Los Altibajos and Salsa N Pepper. My band director was promoted to the Director of Fine Arts for the El Paso Independent School District the year after i graduated. In 2017 Jazz Unlimited had a concert honoring him. They invited several of his former band students to perform on stage with him.

Those guys are certainly on my playlist. Cannonball went from being a HS band director to one of the more accomplished performers in jazz (and an international star). Was how I was introduced to the works of the late, great Joe Zawinul (will have to share a story of how I met and became friends with two of his sons).

I would be there if it weren't Mother's Day. I know my wife isn't interested, so I'll have to pass on the concert. Hope it goes well. Super cool for James -
