It's good but it's no Fast Times
100% spot on. It's crazy that Happy Days ran until 1984, but Winkler already played kind of a dork in the 1982 movie Nightshift.Prosperdick said:NoahAg said:It's funny b/c that was probably the last time Matthew Broderick was cool. That movie was a landmark film for me as a teenager. I left the theater thinking Ferris was the coolest guy on the planet and every girl I knew thought Sloane was the epitome of teenage girl chic.
My wife even named our daughter after Sloane Peterson.
Broderick and Winkler, two peas in a pod.
True but Winkler had already literally jumped the shark by then...I'd say by 1980 Winkler was no longer "cool" on Happy Days.beanbean said:100% spot on. Ferris and the McCallisters also live in the same suburb.

Yeah, this was a good, fun movie. Certainly on the "80s movies" Mt Rushmore, in my opinion. I'd put Better Off Dead up there as well.

That's Choizen from Karate Kid 2 and Cobra Kai.

Finally, Cameron's dad had to have killed him when he got home, right??

Winkler didn't kill someone while driving drunk in the U.K. like Broderick. That didn't help Broderick much for years.
this is genius 1980's dialogue.Max Power said:That scene with Jennifer Gray and Charlie Sheen is favorite part of the whole movie.HtownAg92 said:NoahAg said:Drugs?HtownAg92 said:You mean Jennifer "Baby" Gray. And a funny cameo by Charlie Sheen with her.AgTrip said:
Jennifer Aniston as Jeannie Bueller!! I forgot she was in that!
No thanks.
No, I mean are you in for drugs?
BOY: Drugs?
JEANIE: No, thank you. I'm straight.
BOY: I meant, are you here for drugs?
JEANIE: Why are you here?
BOY: Drugs.
JEANIE: I don't know why I'm here.
BOY: Then why don't you go home?
JEANIE: Why don't you put your thumb up your butt?
BOY: You want to talk about your problem?
JEANIE: With you? Are you serious?
BOY: Yeah, I'm serious.
JEANIE: Blow yourself.
JEANIE: You really want to know what's wrong?
JEANIE: Alright. If you've got the time, I've got the troubles. In a nutshell, I hate my brother. How's that?
BOY: That's cool. Did you shoot him or something?
JEANIE: No, not yet.
JEANIE: I went home to confirm that the ****head was ditching school and a guy broke into the house and I called the cops and they picked me up for making a phony phone call.
BOY: What do you care if your brother ditches school?
JEANIE: Why should he get to ditch school when everybody else has to go?
BOY: You could ditch.
JEANIE: I'd get caught.
BOY: So, you're pissed at him because he ditches and doesn't get caught?
JEANIE: Basically.
BOY: Then your problem is you.
JEANIE: Excuse me?
BOY: Excuse you. You oughta spend a little more time dealing with yourself and a little less time worrying about what your brother does. It's just an opinion.
BOY: There's somebody you should talk to.
JEANIE: If you say Ferris Bueller, you lose a testicle.
BOY: You know him?

So many great moments in this movie. Just a couple:
- The great synth/drum machine score that swells when Cameron talks about facing his dad after killing the car.
- Ferris furiously racing to beat his parents home but stopping to chat up the two girls in bikinis.
All done to Rotating Heads by The English Beat...what an inspired choice for that entire sequence. I wish more movies today would put more thought into their soundtracks...Hughes obviously did. It's usually the difference between a good/great movie and a classic.Aust Ag said:double aught said:

Didn't he actually run past the girls (because he was running so fast), then circled back. Genius.
Absolutely. The camera never leaves the girls. He runs out of frame and, a few seconds later, walks back in. "Hi, Ferris Bueller"Aust Ag said:double aught said:

I've always loved the movie, but when I see it now it just seems so clear now that Cameron is going to off himself after Ferris & Slone leave. He can't face his dad. He doesn't have joy in hardly anything. At the end he seemed to just let go of all his anxiety. I think because in his mind he's accepted it's the end.
So I was researching Broderick's auto incident real quick to see what happened ..Hit a random reddit thread on it and these were the first two responsesSea Speed said:
Plus, he married a horse. Whats up with that?

A reminder that this was a life changing moment for Broderick. Not only did he have to go through the trauma of killing people but the incident was so life shaping he never drove a vehicle again, hence his want to live in NYC and travel by foot, subway, and taxi. The other new activity he developed was his love of horseback riding which he focused on after this incident to film the Oscar winning movie Glory. It was this new love of horseback riding that helped him move forward past the events in Ireland and into his new relationship and marriage with horse Sarah Jessica Parker.

Interesting.
I recall the mention of alcohol back in the day but maybe it was speculation by the press at the time and has been scrubbed.
Glad to hear there was no drinking, but wow did he get off light, and not meeting the son/brother of the victims when he said he would is pretty classless.
