At least that is what this reviewer says.
He points out that Disney has had a string of disappointments including losing $106million on their recent production of "Lightyear".
Illumination succeeded with Minions, Puss N Boots, and now stands to make a billion on Mario.

Regardless of true or not, I'm sure this youtuber sets the standard of being impartial

You do know we have a F16 board, do you? Or did you make a mistake?

Yeah, I figured I'd get some plusses if I posted on F16 but this seemed more like an Entertainment post to me - besides I was interested to see the reaction from here.

Yes, the quality of both Disney and Pixar storytelling has gone down as they have seem to have forgotten to make their movies fun and entertaining for wide audiences.

but illumination as a long way to go before they have a string of true classics under their belt.

and Mario is not a "classic" by any stretch.
Truth!

Also, Illumination had nothing to do with Puss in Boots 2…..that's Dreamworks

YellowFlash is pretty biased. I wouldn't take his word as gospel.

Illumination has had one massive franchise so far, which is great but they've got a ways to go. And Lightyear was a film no one asked for that got overshadowed by a lesbian relationship in the film.

Also need to take the pandemic and shift in distribution into account, of the top 20 grossing animated films all but one (Rise of Gru) was made before 2019. You've got movies like Soul that was a fantastic film but released on Disney+, Onward that released a week or two before the world shut down, or Encanto that people loved but just didn't do well at the box office and released soon after on Disney+.

I am intrigued to see how things play out going forward and I'm glad to see other studios getting lots of eyeballs, but this dude obviously has an agenda.

Disney movies have a Disney+ problem that they need to figure out.

People will still go see good movies in theaters, but more people know that Disney movies will soon be on Disney+, so if you are already paying for that service, it is much easier to wait for it to go to streaming.

The Illumination movies make it to streaming in probably the same amount of time, but my guess is most parents either couldn't tell you what service that is or are much less likely to have that service (Peacock).

But I also think Disney needs to keep the focus on letting the storytellers make the movies that make the money. Focus on the story and stop trying to put in unnecessary detours that are unnecessarily political or educational talking points.
