Just finished wool. Really great book, I couldn't put it down!

It was interesting to see how the tv show differed and the changes they made. I think they did a good job adapting it. Looking forward to seeing the next season now

This is what I have gathered from the different cleanings. The people in the silo see the real outside world on the displays. Cleaners are shown through their helmet a computer generated green landscape. They then believe the world is okay and their theory of a better outside is verified. They then want to clean the camera to show everybody what they see. However, when they clean the camera they actually show everybody the outside still sucks.

This is basically what Rashida Jones character says before she goes out. She said that all the people who are sent to clean say they won't, but when they get out there they do. She said it was because the saw the world was okay (as she believed) and wanted those in the Silo to see.

This shouldn't be a question. She basically foretold the whole thing and reason.

The only real mystery about what's on the monitors/helmet is the question someone brought up of why Bernard shut hers down. Everything else is pretty well explained and shown in the show.

I hope Rebecca Ferguson comes back. Then again I was hoping Anne Perkins was going to make it too.

She's currently filming season two.
If they're already filming any swag/guestimate on when we'll see season 2? Spring of 2024?

Depends on if the actors strike tonight, but all indications so far are that they will. If so, it depends on how long the strike lasts. Could be a couple months, which would mean season two obviously gets pushed back a couple months as well. I would have guessed late spring/early summer 2024, but with a strike maybe late summer/early fall 2024? It's hard to say.

Are the writers still on strike?

Yes. But productions have been able to shoot scripts that were completed before the May 1st deadline, and it sounds like most if not all of season two was written before then (they started writing S2 way early, like nearly a year ago). That said, if the actors strike as well tonight, all of Hollywood shuts down for who knows how long.

I think they will. There's no money for the working actors.

Right, which was reinforced by clues and events the rest of the series.

However, the tape still gets me. If the environment is deadly then the bad tape either loses its seal after a time or the gassing leaving the silo degrades it. Both lead to a dead cleaner. The good tape keeps its seal and cleaner lives.

Or if the environment is okay, then definitely the gassing kills the cleaners after the bad tape loses its seal. The good tape keeps the cleaner alive.

I get that the gassing thing is technically possible but I'm gonna be pretty annoyed if that's happening. Talk about a convoluted plot. They could just poison the people's water or use good tape and fill the suit itself with poison gas or any number of other things. There's no reason to build them a faulty suit and then also poison them with gas inside the silo.

Using bad tape on the suit makes some plot sense because then the people going out also serves as a test for if the air is clean or not but also makes sure if it's not that they die inside the view of the camera and don't make it over the hill. That way the people inside don't have any reason to think they survived.

Can anyone explain the rule against elevators? It's a brilliant addition to the setting/plot but do they ever say why they can't have elevators other than it's in the Pact?

I don't think it has been explained but my guess is to slow movement to make a large scale revolt more difficult. Same with only LE/Judicial having access to radios and an intercom system.

I assumed to need less energy.

I figure the elevator rule is for many reasons, including energy, maintenance, and safety. I also thought it may be to keep people from traveling the silo unless they really had to do so - to keep people in their sections. This would also make a revolt difficult, not impossible, but difficult.

They seem fairly opposed to automation of any kind. Not letting people have magnifying tools above a certain power limits their healthcare and their technology.

I still consider Bernard a bad guy. He sent the star gazing dude to the mines for 10 years. He sent Juliette out to her death for being too nosey. Sure he might be trying to protect the silo, but he could probably handle things a lot differently.

He's flawed. He does bad things because he believes it helps the greater good. Makes him doing bad things thinking he's doing a good thing.

I saw Robbins at a movie theater a couple years ago, at my first movie back after the pandemic. Dude was shockingly tall, and stuck out like a sore thumb.

Coincidentally, this was the same theater where I peed in a stall next to Common (see: page 3 of this thread).

Weird. He seemed to be as tall as Maverick in Top Gun.

How was killing Marnes and John's helping the greater good? Seemed like a temper tantrum to me.

I saw this recently, but didn't want to bring back an old thread.

Does anybody else think that the final episode sorta ruined the season? WHY would they bother making a CGI nature paradise just for the cleaners to see? What purpose would that even serve? The SILO leaders (or whoever) could have just avoided the entire controversy if they hadn't had that.

This was explained in the books much better. They always questioned why the cleaner ALWAYS cleans the camera. The old sheriff had it in his mind that he was going to skip cleaning it. Then he sees the image of the greenery and cleans them hoping everyone can see what he does.

So, they are fed an image and then think that everything outside is fine, but everyone inside can't tell and they clean.

Also watched this recently and loved it. Really glad they have a plan to cover all 3 books.
