There's precious few tentpole media franchises that carry entire media companies, so not surprised at all.

I never read the books nor seen a single movie, but realize they are beloved around the world and is a ton of fun

Hopefully it'll be a little like the Dune transformation

I think something like this would benefit greatly from a single visionary. I actually think someone like Guillermo Del Toro would do a great job, or something similar to his style.

Just like any IP, if a showrunner takes it on who truly loves the books and has a singular vision, it could potentially be great.

But I also lean towards Madmarttigan's way of thinking. There is so much great fantasy out there that has yet to be adapted. I would rather see some of that than see a Harry Potter reboot. A Dresden Files HBO show is something I would kill for.

I wonder if they would give any thought to aging the characters up in the initial story. Even 2-3 years could potentially make it so you are casting kids that are actually capable of acting from the get go.
Maybe it doesnt make sense with the traditional school year ages, but its a world of magic so that maybe doesnt even matter.

In today's media landscape that's an eternity, especially when Batman, Superman, Spider-man, etc have been rebooted numerous times since then. I know it's not apples to apples, but still. As a corporation, it would be malpractice to go that long without utilizing one of your top assets, given that no one really cares about the Fantastic Beasts movies.

All that said, I'm agnostic toward the Harry Potter franchise itself (I had already aged out by the time the first one came along, though I still saw all the movies), and, personally, I'd rather WB not waste their time and money on something like this.

I'd think it would make more sense to try to build on the story if you're this close to the original movies, but might be that even JK realizes how lazy her own worldbuilding is

The original movies caught the wave of the books popularity at just the right time. All of those watchers and readers are much older now, and I don't know if they will watch a reboot.

Instead I wish they had something for that older audience. Like a show about Harry in his early 20s. He's an auror chasing down Deatheaters, has a little PTSD he had to deal with. Ginny is his wife the professional Quidditch player and you could follow her around to different locations. Harry could use her team's travel as cover for him to travel around chasing leads.

I just don't know if you have the built in audience for a reboot without the popularity of the books.

Since y'all are talking GOT, cast Kit Harington and Rose Leslie as Harry and Ginny.

The difference between rebooting Spiderman and Harry Potter is that Spiderman reboots have the same main character in entirely different stories (Green Goblin vs The Lizard vs The Vulture).

Superhero reboots learned to quit showing radioactive spiders and the Wayne's deaths because audiences didn't care.

The Harry Potter remakes will be the EXACT SAME (albeit expanded upon) plot of the original movies.
