59. Most of the ones I haven't seen are pre-1950's.

This is me too.

53 for me. I didn't count another 10 or so that I haven't watched all the way through.

I realize this is an "All-Time" list, but it really should be chopped up into a few divisions:
*Silent Movies (Antique Era)
*Pre-1970-ish (Classic Era)
*1970-1995 (Modern Era)
*1995-present (CGI/Comic Book Era)

Ok , kidding about that last one. Movies have changed so much though. It's like putting the song "Yankee Doodle" up against "Stairway to Heaven" in the all-time great songs category. Apples & Oranges almost.

I watched Shane last night. Love how they filmed it right in front of Grand Teton and Alan Ladd gives a great performance. I can definitely see why it's a classic.

Real F16 material in the preamble:

"American film has marginalized the diversity of voices that make our nation and its stories strong and these lists reflect that intolerable truth. AFI acknowledges its responsibility in curating these lists that has reinforced this marginality and looks forward to releasing new lists that will embrace our modern day and drive culture forward."

Puke. Can't I just enjoy the list without feeling guilty?
What is kinda funny is that 60 movies on this list are from before 1970. 80 films before 1980.

So basically most of these movies were before DEI was ever considered. Before the civil rights movement etc.

Maybe if they focused more on writing great original stories to tell on film instead of focusing on hit diversity quotas, there would be more recent films on this list

One of my favorite films and a great one.

Shane is practically the poster child for the whole "anti-PAN AND SCAN" movement.

Watching that movie on a small CRT as everyone had in the old days is a crime.

I remember going to see the 40th anniversary re-release (1996 ) on the local movie screen. What a revelation. Beautifully done.

This list was made in 2007, and only covered up to 2005. So yeah, given that it covers a little more than a century, it makes sense that 80% of the selections correspond to about 80% of the years covered.

So LOTR in 2001 is the most recent movie on there? As others have said, too much of "its old therefore its great".

Surprised that I've seen 23 though.

82. Way more than I thought I would have. I apparently need to watch the Marx Brothers movies.

63 but part of that is due to my father watching old movies w/ me as a kid. He was a big 40s - 60s cinema guy and we shared a lot of movies of his childhood together. For some reason he hated 70s movies w/ a few exception.
