This has always been one of my favorite and most often quoted movies of all time. Came out in 1989, did decent at the box office, and was before Tom Hanks really got huge. He had Splash and Big under his belt and was known more as a light hearted comedic actor at the time. This movie never seems to really get quoted or have much of a following. But if you meet someone else that has seen or loved it it's a non-stop exchange of movie quotes. And when it's on I always stop down and watch. It's just completely entertaining. Wonder if anyone else here really likes this movie.

My 70 year old aunt loves this movie. I've never seen it.

This movie is average. It came out at a very competitive time for 80s movies, plus it was the end of the 80s movies cycle.

It's been kept relevant by all the 80s kids having families and eventually moving from the inner city to the suburbs over the last 20 years or so. If you're 40-55 years old, name the first movie you thought of when you made your move with your new wife from midtown to one of the suburbs of your city. Nine out of ten times, the answer is "The Burbs".

It's got a good amount of Tom Hanks yelling, which is one of the best things in movies.

a fav of wife and me.

so many quotes;
We don't have that kinda time.. I use this easily once a week.
There go the ******* brownies
I just wanna relax and drink a couple hundred beers
Satan is our friend, satan is our pal
It came with the frame
About a 9 on the tension scale there Rube
I'm only trying to take a nap. I'm only laying here with my eyes closed trying to get some ******* sleep (Such an 80s Tom Hanks thing to say)
Now they know that we know that they know that we know (Way before Friends did it!)
I pick up garbage from cans, not from the street!

I feel like whenever we end up watching the burbs, we either have just watched or will soon watched the money pit.

I use all of these regularly.

Sunday night, I was taking out the trash muttering, "Because YOU. ARE. a garbageman!" to myself

I was really excited to see it when it came but was ultimately disappointed. I'd just turned 13. I think I was at an age that I didn't appreciate or fully understand some of the darker humor, and I expected something more overt from a joke standpoint. I remember thinking all of the funny stuff was in the trailer. I was more of an over the top "The Great Outdoors" kid at the time.

The main joke I always remember that I laughed at was "it came with the frame".

It is on my list to re-watch at some point. I might appreciate that stage of 80's humor more today, even if it is just invoking nostalgia.

The Money Pit is on the list as well.

This is one of my favorite 80s romps and I figured out that my husband class of '89 had not seen it because I told him our yard was starting to look like the Klopek's house and he had no idea what I was talking about.

So we watched the movie and his favorite thing is that Brother Theodore (Reuben????) had this bit on the Tonight Show a million years ago.

I will close with a resounding, PIZZA DUDE!!!"

A very underrated 80s classic IMHO.

Oh my god.. I can't believe I forgot to mention this in my original post.

So the neighbors across the street from us are SUPER private. Every other house on the block, we pretty much all know each other, our kids play together, we hang out, etc.

But this house across the street, they have a boy same age as my older kid, and my kid has never seen him, literally. I've seen this guy maybe 10 times in their 7 years there, the wife maybe 3 times.
This guy will close the garage door before he gets out of his Tesla. In the summer, I'll see the garage open up, he's already behind his push mower to mow, and when he's done, he walks that mower in, and the door closes behind him. Really, really recluse.

Anyway, wife and I call this family the Klopek's. We've had to explain it once or twice to some our neighbors, but others knew the reference. Other neighbors refer to this family as the Klopek's now too lol.

He should have stuck with it rather than taking on lame serious roles. The world needs more Money Pit and Big.
Let's go, Brandon!

I don't remember much about the movie other than Carrie Fisher was now in her 30's and hot as ever

I skipped school and watched The Burbs and Dream A Little Dream back to back.

I only remember Corey Feldman and Courtney Gaines were in it as well.

I was a huge Tom Hanks fan going back to Bosum Buddies and Bachelor Party.

The way Hanks slides down the front steps when he emerges from the burning house is one of my favorite, understated moves of all time.

Great nostalgic flick. It's not some cinematic masterpiece but it's a great watch.

RICKY! GET THIS LAME-O OUTTA YOUR YARD!

I could seriously start with the opening credits and give you the whole move, Andy Dwyer style. It's firmly in my Top 5.

The best part of the whole damned movie is when Rumsfield is on the roof. The rifle starts to slide down, he gets up and the radio goes, he makes it to the rifle, but Ricky yells "YO RUMSFIELD!" startling him and causing him to fall off the roof. Maybe my most favorite piece of slapstick physical comedy in any movie ever.

It's one of my favorite movies. Have the dvd and have it saved on DVR. Watch it several times a year. Annoys my family when I watch it.

Have you ever seen Club Paradise with Robin Williams? It's another oldie but goodie that I watch a couple of times per year.

Feldman - Woah, are you ok?
Rumsfeld - of course I'm okay!

That fall would put a man his age in the hospital lol.

This quote has always been our favorite:

Mark Rumsfield:
Art!
Bonnie Rumsfield:
Your wife is home!
Mark Rumsfield:
And your house is on fire!
Art:
My wife is home?

Fun memory: back when there was a Pizza Hut in Northgate, they would show movies on Friday night. The Burbs was the first movie we saw there and laughed the whole time.

Saw part of this when I was little, mainly the part where they show a clip of some movie with Jason (or someone) busting through the wall on the stairs. I noped right out and started sprinting up the stairs at the house. That's all I've got to say about that.
