Easily VH for me. I was listening to them long before I started listening to ACDC and as a guitar player I've tried to learn as much of Eddie's tricks as my fingers will allow.

Overall I'm a VanHagar fan more than DLR, but I still celebrate their entire catalog. My first VH album was 1984, but I started playing guitar right when f-u came out in the early 90's.

My wife surprised me w/tix to see them in 2009, but we decided to move back to TX and were lucky to quickly find a buyer for our home. The show if I recall was right around the time we were moving, or right afterwards, and both money/time were tight so we had to skip it. Always regretted it because I never got to see them live.

Saw them in 2016/17 with DLR. They were horrible. So, you're ok.

Easily VH, probably with Sammy unless I knew I was getting prime DLR.

Trying to think of an ideal "opening band" for the show that's not too big of deal, and my choice would be RATT.

They typically had opening bands that sucked.

They had BTO for the 5150 tour. First band I ever saw live.

Yeah. And BTO was way past their prime.

After The Fire opened in '82.

The Velcros opened in '84. You like rockabilly? That's what they played.

I had never heard of them until that show. I wasn't saying they were good.

Van Halen and it's not close for me. EVH is the GOAT IMO.

Best Van Halen show that I saw was with Sammy ... he lost his voice and had to give up early during the official tour show in Dallas, promised to make it up and they did a free concert early summer 1991 in the Dallas West End with the stage in the street.

I went to grade school north of Detroit Rock City and recall my friend's older brother recalling how Alex set his drum set on fire at the last concert there for their first album tour ~78-79. I was pee green with envy.

My rock and roll journey had not started in the Bon Scott era for AC/DC but Back in Black would have been a great concert ... no way my parents would have allowed that, though.

Saw both in their prime and hands down Bon Scott and AC/DC.

Bon was an absolute showman.

I have seen VH three times all with Sammy and AC/DC twice. Give me VH all day everyday live. Sammy was just so superior to Dave vocally, Mike and Alex, and of course EVH was worth the price of the ticket alone. AC/DC just did not have the energy that VH had in concert. Now, if I am listening to music give me the full albums of AC/DC "Back in Black", "Highway to Hell", "High Voltage", and "For those about to Rock." The are so damn solid.

My parents saw Van Halen before they broke big in a club in Wichita Ks. They stayed around after the show was over and hung out with the band and had drinks with them. My parents both said the Van Halen brothers were very friendly and just happy to be there. Dave was Dave already. My mom still has the napkin that they all wrote their autographs on somewhere. I grew up on old school Van Halen. My first memory of music just blowing my mind was my dad putting a big set of 1970's headphones on my head pushing play on Running With the Devil. I was about 7 at the time.

Also, I used to work with a guy that grew up in Pasadena and graduated high school in the mid late 1970's. That was when Van Halen was getting started and playing house parties. They also used to set up their equipment at his highschool in their quad area and play for the highschoolers at lunch. He has a bunch of pics of all this. He also went to Pasadena high and was friends with Chris Holmes who would eventually become WASP's guitarist.

All that said, I love me some ACDC too. Hard choice, but I'd still go with Van Halen in their prime.
This is going to turn out to be an incredible humble brag when you do 23 and Me and discover your real dad.

Haha. I born in 74 and this was April 3rd, 1978 according this website. Van Halen - 1978 - Tour Dates (themightyvanhalen.net) Yep, that was the club...Pogo's. WOW, they busted their a$$es in 1978. Looks like they hit Wichita twice. Pretty sure that April show was the one my parents went to though, because they said the album just came out which according to the site, the album came out on 2/10/78. And my Dad's birthday is on April 4th so probably an early birthday night out on the town.

This is a cool idea, but I agree there isn't a right answer. I'm in the AC/DC camp but I would love to have seen EVH shred live. I'm also proud that my son agrees with that. My guess as he gets better on guitar, he may shift his thinking. Interesting question to resurface later.

Alice In Chains opened part of the For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tour. Unfortunately that run ended shortly before I saw it. Collective Soul on the Balance tour was pretty good. Also saw Vince Neil and Skid Row open for VH.

Van Halen. The real Van Halen with David Lee Roth. With Sammy they made $$. With Roth they made History.
No, I don't care what CNN or MSNBC said this time

Glad to hear they upped their game on openers. Hearing "Der Kommisar" played before the Mighty Van Halen opens with "Romeo Delight" doesn't really get you pumped up.

I have no doubt - watching old VH concerts now DLR was pretty horrible live even in his youth. Sure his 'style' aged like Brooke Shields to Kathy Griffin, but he could never really sing. The swagger was popular though.

With Sammy still gets my vote - the surprise pop-up concernt in the West End in Dallas in '91 takes the trophy.
