It looks like this should be good but it definitely seems like a re-hash of the part of 22 Jump Street where he is dating the Captain's daughter

Watched this last night and thought it was okay, but far from great. I liked the relationship between Jonah Hill and Lauren London as a mixed-race couple. Their chemistry was solid, and the dialogue between them was sweet and funny.

The main problem with the movie was the depiction of Hill's parents played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny. It seems as though Hollywood has only one version of white parents in mixed-race movies, which is that they are blindly offensive and WAY over the top. Duchovny had only a few lines and came off just like the dad in Get Out. Most of the dialogue from JLD seemed wildly contrived and I didn't believe a person in this day and age would really talk that way (outside of a movie where race is a topic).

Eddie Murphy is underutilized in the movie but I kind of liked his quiet intensity; mostly it's just good to see him in movies again. Nia Long, as Murphy's wife, is completely ignored which is a waste of good talent.

Agreed, especially on the comments about EM and NL. Seems like they wrote all their jokes for the white parents and forgot to do anything for the black parents.

6/10 for me, perfect Netflix movie.

I don't really like Eddie Murphy the serious actor. Not fair, but I grew up on SNL, Raw, 48 HRS, Beverly Hills Cop etc.

"Look who's coming to dinner" was much more edgy & relevant given the time when it was released.
This just recycles tropes & old jokes. (White dudes can't play basketball, black women & their weaves etc)

I don't disagree with you. We're probably around the same age cuz I grew up on those EM films too. I would say Dreamgirls was probably his best dramatic role. I'm happy he's acting again but wish he could get better material.

And I agree about Guess Who's Coming To Dinner being much more candid even though it was made 50+ years ago. The running joke about that movie was that it showed white parents are okay with their daughters bringing home Sidney Poitier.

I was annoyed at how the black parents were automatically angry and combative. Maybe it is an LA or NYC thing, but if someone really acted that way, and the daughter was also defensive of it, would call it quits way earlier.

Didn't think it was funny. Tried too hard.

I enjoyed it. Didn't get some of the references about Drake and such but I thought it was a fairly entertaining and fun take on racial and religious conflicts in families. Eddie Murphy hasn't aged in 30 years it is nuts.

24 y/o daughter talked me into watching this movie. We both had a good laugh at many of the Blacks versus Jews things that people who don't live in LA probably wouldn't understand or find as funny.

The movie wasn't as over the top as I was expecting with the LGBTQIAA++ agenda.

As I was watching the show and kept listening to Lauren London's voice, I thought, this whole situation reminds me of, and her voice sounds like, the story arc on Entourage where Turtle tries dating a Black girl whose dad is this overbearing manager of a body shop.

I also thought that Jonah Hill's character was acting like a knock off of Turtle from Entourage.

Then I hit IMDB and confirmed it.

Also found out that Lauren London was a baby momma for Nipsey Hussle. Mind Blown.

David Duchovny kind of phoned it in. JLD was cringe worthy and Eddie Murphy as NOI dad was awesome.

Jonah Hill got old and tried way too hard to be Turtle from Entourage.

Had potential but fell flat and the way Hill looks was oddly a distraction for me.

Watched it tonight, thought it was fine. Not great, just fine. Felt like Jonah Hill was playing an adult version of his character in Superbad. Eddie Murphy was fantastic and I thought Lauren London was good too. Julia Louis Dreyfus was a bit over the top in a way that fell flat. I did like David Duchovney, but like others mentioned, he felt under utilized, as did Nia Long. Overall had its moments, good enough for a background watch, not something I'm going to come running back to.

Archie was pining for the days before the 70s. From the theme song Kate Smith selling songs (30s and 40s) and Glen Miller's hit parade (late 30s and early 40s) pinned down the exact time. Those were the days to him.

Same as it ever was.

You're probably just yanking LMCane's chain but if not, I don't think that was the intended point. I think he was implying that younger generations seem to think none of these issues have ever been addressed in popular culture. When, in fact, most of them have been covered more directly 40-50 years ago.

This is one of the most weirdly and incompetently paced/structured movies ever, with next to no tangible stakes, which features maybe the worst green screen shot I've ever seen, and for some reason really bad special effects (?), along with so many janky establishing drone shots, not to mention a script that feels like a first and only draft, written and directed by someone who's never done either of those things before.

And yet… I still laughed.

Quite a bit, actually. At least during the first half. I just really like Jonah Hill's sense of humor, and I guess it's been a while since I've seen him in a straight up comedy. Don't get me wrong, it's a truly terrible movie, but one I'm not at all mad I watched.

That said... Ezra WAS a ****ing idiot, and Eddie Murphy's character was 100% right to think he was a piece of **** who didn't deserve his daughter. For some reason, Ezra QUIT HIS JOB at literally the same moment he and his girlfriend decided to BUY A HOUSE together. In LOS ANGELES. Then, when he KNEW his father-in-law-to-be was attending his bachelor party, Ezra STILL decided to go to a strip club??? WITH his cokehead friends??? That might be the dumbest, most unbelievable thing I've seen in a movie in the last ten years. Never mind the fact that I wouldn't trust a single person who did coke or surrounded himself with close, cokehead friends. I was legit mad when Murphy changed his mind about Ezra, simply because the script needed him to. Man, that was bad.
