so are they a real band or just a means for the Neptunes to advertise themselves? I just saw them on SNL and while the song was catchy, the singing was quite average

On their new album, they played basically all the instruments themselves. On their first album, they arranged all the music, while this band, Spymob, played it.

It's quite different from Neptunes production, and the first album is GREAT. The new album has some great songs on it, but overall is less consistenly listenable to me.

don't believe the hype. n.e.r.d. is subpar at best

here is a litte lyrical sample:

Every once in a while there is some *******
Giving you ****, cause something in his life won't fold
Usually, I'd walk away
The "peace/piece" offering another day
He seems not to wanna trade
So he must pay (its the inevitable, it's going down!)

Subpar? You're subpar, you piece of ****..

Nerd has bad lyrics? Riiight.

tell me this verse was not written by the Father himself and subsequently passed on to Pharrell for use on Fly or Die:

Don't let your teachers teach you about wealth to death
Maybe there's something else (I'm checking out)
Don't let Massah teach you that we are by ourselves
Cause trust me there's something else (I'm checking out)
Oh la la la, la la, la la - la la la, la la, la la
Shh.. maybe there's something else (I'm checking out)
See we're not part of the Magna Charta
There's no shuttle for us to charter

That little slice of lyrical perfection was off of Jump, a new song with Good Charlotte (rules).

Next time, you take shots at N.E.R.D., I would at least hope that you come up with something better than that. ***.

The scary thing is, I can't tell if the rest of your post is serious or tongue in cheek...

In Search Of... > Fly or Die

With that said, the Neptunes are the top production team in music today. Way better than they were a few years ago.

actually, i think good charlotte sucks. that part was definitley tongue in cheek!

top production team? if were going by quanity, then yes. quality, hardly. everything they make sounds the same. heavy on bass and drums. nothing that could actually be labled "music." that milkshake song shows just out drained of ideas they really are. one of the big problems with the neptunes is that they produce everything, and now everything sounds the same.

when it comes to making the jump from producer to artist, i think Pharrell is more of a p. diddy, rather than a kanye. (read: please stay behind the boards)

I think the Neptunes are in a lull right now. However, don't think they're over. I gotta agree with Frick though, their beats are getting a little too uninpired and simple lately.

I think the top production in hip hop right now is Kanye West and Just Blaze by the way.

i dont really care for their lyrics but they have some good beats. I also heard an interview with pharell and he said that snl screwed them over by not letting them use something, I cant recall what it was but he was pissed.

Just Blaze > Kanye West (behind the boards)

And yes, the Neptunes are the top production team in music (mainstream) today. That "same ol' synth/bass" argument was valid in 2000/2001 (see "I Just Wanna Love You" and "Shake Ya Ass". But nowadays, they are much, much, much better. "She Wants to Move" sounds nothing like "Grindin'". In a genre where sampling and rehash are prevalent, the Neptunes sound head and shoulders above the comp while making ORIGINAL beats.

1. Neptunes
2. Just Blaze
3. Alchemist
4. Kanye West
5. RJD2

^That's how it goes in Hip Hip right now.
