I am almost finished with the Harry Potter series with my 10 year old girl. I want to start something similar with my 7 year old boy, but don't just want to start Harry Potter all over again. I read the book aloud, she would just listen along.

I think Lord of the Rings series may be too much for a 7 year old, but not sure? I enjoyed it a lot when I read it, but I was an adult.

Any recommendations? A single book is fine as well if no series come to mind. Trying to find something we would both enjoy like HP, or I can at least tolerate.

Nancy Drew - my husband has been reading the whole series to my daughter, who is 12. Some of the vocabulary is dated but they have fun with it.

**Oops, reading comprehension fail.**

For your son, look into the Eragon book series by Paolini. It has a very LOTR feel. My son gobbled up the whole series between 3-4th grade (he was an advanced reader). He liked them so much that I decided to give them a try and listened to them on Audible. I enjoyed them a lot.

If you want something fantasy that's a bit more palatable for someone that age, Chronicles of Narnia are great. The Hobbit would be good too, but Lord of the Rings would definitely be too dense for someone that young.

The Hobbit on the other hand was a story written for Tolkien's kids.

Might try The Chronicles of Narnia

The Hobbit, Eragon, Narnia all good suggestions.

The Redwall series is also a great one

Lloyd Alexander's Chronicles of Prydain is a great youth fantasy series. Maybe just a bit beyond a seven year old, but maybe when he turns eight.

Choose your own adventure books maybe?
CNN is an enemy of the state and should be treated as such.

Check out the "Roar" series. Both our kids (8 and 6) loved it.

I was obsessed with CYOA but can't really find the vintage ones anymore.

I am going way below what everyone else is doing.

Captain Underpants, Dog Man, and Cat Kid by Dav Pilkey

I loved reading those books with my boy

I don't remember how age appropriate things are/were, but I enjoyed getting through the Lemony Snicket series.

Spiderwick Chronicles was a favorite of one of our kids.
For the slightly more advanced, consider Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief to start off the Percy Jackson series

Goosebumps had a bunch of CYOA.

A bunch of good previous suggestions. Loved Captain Underpants as a kid too.

For fantasy, not as well known, but I loved the chronicles of prydain growing up. Most famous from it was The Black Cauldron, which had an animated movie based off of it.

The Merlin Trilogy by Mary Stewart is also good.

Wrinkle in time.

Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper

Magic Treehouse series

Animorphs

Brave Ollie Possum is a great book to read with your kids. It's about overcoming fears, and has some scary scenes, but a good read.

Percy Jackson is a fun book. Lots in the series too so they can keep going as they get older

I grew up on the Chronicles of Narnia, though it gets a lot of shade from the woke.

Pretty much all the Rick Riordan stuff might be in the sweet spot - Percy Jackson, Kane Chronicles, Trials of Apollo

Came here to say this. I was definitely doing book reports on these by mid- grade school.

I read the Chronicles of Narnia to my daughter when she was about that age. I also read the series of history books that Rush Limbaugh wrote about a time traveling horse.

Charlotte's Web and The Wizard of Oz are great books that my son liked. TWOO is a lot different from the movie.

We also really enjoyed reading anything by Shel Silverstein. It's mostly poetry, but it's really fun to read out loud.

In the middle of Wings of Fire with my 10-yr old girl and 9-yr old boy. He's reading the Land of Stories on his own. I mix in some kiddish stuff too after the adventure series. Like Geronimo Stilton, Ranger series, etc. He also liked the Boxcar Kids and Beverly Cleary books.

I hope to do the Narnia series next. It's about that time.

ETA: we also read the good Roald Dahl books. Had a little tradition of watching the movies after the books to compare and contrast.

Been thinking about introducing my kiddo to the Bill Wallace books I enjoyed as a boy.

  • Trapped in Death Cave
  • Snot Stew
  • Danger on Panther Peak

Also the Matt Christopher sports books. I have very fond memories of "The Kid Who Only Hit Homers."
