What's the main appeal of vinyl records?

You summed up vinyl LPs perfectly. Before CDs the thrill of the hunt going into a record store and looking for something interesting was so enjoyable. And finding some obscure album that turned out to be one of your favorites was priceless.

I have about 625 vinyl records and continue to collect (even going to the Austin Record Convention tomorrow). I initially started collecting in the 80s just to be able to have the music since only way to have it. During COVID my son and I started listening to the records and brought me back to why I enjoyed it in first place. I love the sound, but even more, the actual touching and playing the album in the manner they were conceived...from beginning to the end (flipping from side 1 to 2). Nothing like looking at the art and reading the liner notes, while discussing with my son. It forces you to slow down and admire the art through touch, sight, and hearing. When he's home we dedicate a Friday or Saturday for listening to albums. It's not something you can do quickly, but actually carve out time to listen and truly appreciate this art form. I even have a designated listening room.

Whether it's stumbling across a great copy of an album you love and have been looking for for years, or finding an album you've never heard about but really like the cover art and picking it up for a great price just to try it out.

I absolutely love this. Typically, I either work off a "want" list or I'll do a quick search to see if an album is well reviewed before I buy. However there are times the cover just speaks to me. It might represent an era or a genre so perfectly I'll buy it without knowing anything else, and those albums hold a special place to me.

The only way I consume music is by listening to entire albums. The band put out a record to be listened to in that order that it was laid out, so that's how I am going to listen to it. I get so much more satisfaction listening to an album all the way through than ever just liste ing to one song.

In my younger days, I out out several records on vinyl for various hardcore punk bands, including a one sided LP with a screen printed b side by a pretty prominent wheat paste artist in houston. I would like to put out more but I dont live in that world anymore.

It's just hipster nonsense. But if you miss shopping for CDs as an outing it's for you

Just looked at that 45, I had no idea that Springsteen wrote that song! Just assumed it was Manfred Mann!

"Wrapped up like a ****** another rumor in the night" Only Springsteen would write that line.. I should have known.

My wife is not a Springsteen fan. A while back she told me she had more reason not to like him because of his poor cover of Blinded By the Light. I had to tell her he wrote it and released it first.

Was thinking about this thread with respect to double LPs - usually live recordings.

I remember on my Scorpions cassette for "World Wide Live" that there was a statement on the tape saying something to the effect of the tape had one song different from the 2 x LP release.

I have no desire to discuss vinyl with anyone who doesn't listen to records. Like it or don't, I couldn't care less. Maybe I'm the exception to the rule though.

Honest question. Kind of talking myself to into taking the plunge with a player and start building a collection but not sure what the allure is for me.

For some I know there's just the cool, eclectic factor but are there any actual audio benefits with a good setup?

I've invested in a whole home Sonos system so this announced Victoria Stream Carbon is what has my attention. But kind of feels like it defeats the purpose in some way.

mostly it is the same as those people who do crossfit or keto. they like to have something to bring up in every conversation, regardless of whether anyone asked or not.

Good news! I'm starting Crossfit AND a Keto diet next week.

I'll make sure to document my progress on this thread.

I'm not much of a "thing" collector but I enjoy seeing a live show and buying an album there. Better memento than a t-shirt or coozie in my opinion and depending on how big the artist is, you can get autographed copies of the album. Heck, when I went to buy an Adam Hood album at the Mucky Duck, I literally bought the album from Adam Hood lol! He was working his own merch table and signing stuff after the show.

I saw this thread a while back and finally got around to posting. I've got a couple plastic tubs full of old records. They are a combination of my mom's and grandfather's collection. It's pretty eclectic ranging from rock, country, instrumental, and kids stuff. There are also several movie soundtracks as well. I've take a rudimentary video of them.

I'd prefer to unload it all at once if there is any interest, but would be willing to piece it out some if needed. My email is username at hotmail and I'm in DFW.

A 1973 FTAB album in the middle of that

Does FTAB still play Joyce's 71st?

McKinney Ag, do you want that setup I posted about since you're thinking of getting into it? I'm in your area.

Albums are analog, as in magnetic tape. Tracks overlap and usually bleed into each other. That quality oftentimes is described as warmer or more live.

Most other recordings are digital, which means each track is recorded separately and the recording itself is more pristeen and isolated. Some prefer that refined sound; others like the more live feel of digital.

As discussed before, albums are also art in themselves, and the whole three dimensional aspect of setting them up is a subjective aspect.

As a musician, to me the best thing about digital is that anyone can invest a few thousand dollars in home recording equipment and create an incredible list of home-spun work.
