The second I saw this subject title I knew it had something to do with me.

Might as well add more fuel to the fire, as I somehow still haven't seen any of these either...

The Birds
Casablanca
Casino
Cool Hand Luke
Dances with Wolves
Erin Brockovich
The Firm
Fletch
Gone with the Wind
Jackie Brown
Mulholland Drive
Psycho
Schindler's List
Unforgiven

Wow shocking list. So are some of the others.

Oscar winners mostly recent but a few I just never watched even in the 80s. Although I did not see those winners I saw most of the other nominated films.
CODA
Nomadland
Moonlight
Green Book
The Artist
Driving Miss Daisy
Out of Africa
The English Patient

Some older classics I just never saw all the way through, but I have seen significant parts of all of them.
Citizen Kane
Lawrence of Arabia
Casablanca
The Birds

Others I never saw that were on someones list:
Fried Green Tomatoes
Life is Beautiful

Wow! As much of a movie buff as you are and you throw this out there?!?!?!? As shocking as Big Cat '93's list was, I think this one takes the cake!

I'm trying to figure out how someone in Hollywood had never seen Casablanca. Hell it was on TCM last night. It's normally on there twice a year.

Never seen:
Titanic
Any F&F
Casino
Any oscar winner the last 10 years except Shape of Water.

Movies that blow my mind if you haven't seen them. You don't have to like them but at least watched them.
Godfather 1/2
Casablanca
Gone with the wind
North by Northwest, Psycho
At least one Marvel movie
Star Wars ANH
At least one Bond film
At least one Indy film
Rooster Cogburn/True Grit
Goodfellas
2001
Apocalypse Now
Gladiator
To Kill a Mockingbird

ETA Animal House. It's on now

Ha, I'm definitely a late bloomer when it comes to some of the classics. Part of that's because I wasn't really into movies until the late '90s, and the other part is because I'm not really a cinephile. I study the hell out of the screenwriting and structure and all that, yet I almost actively don't want to be one of those people who's seen everything, has an encyclopedic knowledge of film history, etc. In a weird way, it's kind of a badge of honor. I guess I've just found that many of those types, while basically being waking IMDbs, don't actively *do* much else (in regards to the industry). In other words, between all the scripts I have to read, TV I have to keep up with, writing I have to do, and trying to get sh*t made in general, I simply don't have all that much time to catch up on the classics.

(That said, the amount of post-2000 movies I've seen that many here haven't *could* come close to making up for my pre-2000 gaps.)

Gone With The Wind might still hold the record for most tickets sold. Forget the box office revenue numbers since inflation makes that number irrelevant over the long haul.

It's a great film. Long, but so well done. And an Oscar for Hattie McDaniel, who had an incredible acceptance speech and was the first person of color to attend the awards dinner (I think).

The scene in Atlanta with all the injured soldiers is amazing and helps put some reality for us modern people into how bad the Civil War really was.

I don't understand Fast and Furious movies getting mentioned here. They aren't classics or even quality.

The OP said popular. The F&F movies are some of the highest grossing films of all time.

Realized recently that the only movies I've seen that were made before 1970 are The Wizard of Oz and a bunch of Disney animated movies.

Might lose all credibility with some here, but I don't think I'm missing out.

Watch one per week and start a thread for each.

Honestly I can't decide if I'm more surprised by Casino, Jackie Brown, or Schindlers List.

Watching older movies can be a bit tough mainly because the pacing is so drastically different in modern movies. Older movies spend so much time in things that wouldn't be included in a modern movie.
You have to put your phone away, remove distractions, picture yourself trapped in a dark theater with a bunch of strangers just bring engrossed in the movie.

  • It's A Wonderful Life
  • Gone With the Wind
  • Lawrence of Arabia

I'll never watch Life because it looks terrible. I've seen snippets here and there and it sucked.

No desire to see Gone with the Wind.

Absolutely want to watch Lawrence of Arabia. There is a remastered 4 hr version on Amazon I have queued up that I'll watch at some point.

I struggled through Vertigo. I'm not sure why but it just never clicked. I love Rear Window and Psycho was awesome. North by Northwest was decent…so I'm not anti-old movies but Vertigo was just weird to me.

Apocalypse Now had awesome stretches and chunks that I felt dragged. I didn't mind it but I'm fine never seeing it again.

Bruce Almighty

I agree that Vertigo is a snooze fest, and I love a lot of Hitchcock. I've only seen Apocalypse Now once and that was the Redux version, which was probably a mistake. It was a struggle to get through.
