It's a Wonderful Life

Always had ridiculed this movie as a kid based off what I presumed was a scene of cheese. You know the whole gathering around the tree at the end with Bailey hugging all his kin? Watched it for the first time a few years back and it hit me in the heart strings. Absolute Classic without a flaw.

the only flaw, or rather complaint, might be the pacing. I think it drags a bit when George is disappointed with his lack of success and then proposes. I get that the plot needs it to happen, but getting through that is always the hardest part of a rewatch.

Tremors is a good pick.

There was a movie in 1985 starring John Travolta and Jamie Lee Curtis about a reporter doing a story on LA fitness clubs.

That movie was Perfect.

Bought it on 4K Blu-ray. But it's also available in 4K on digital for purchase.

Saving Private Ryan
If you could somehow combine the first half of Full Metal Jacket and the first half of Saving Private Ryan, that would be the perfect war movie.

The Dark Knight

One of the few movies I watch over and over again. When I first heard they cast Heath Ledger as Joker, I was pissed.

Django Unchained

Loved the dialogue between all characters

Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Cohen movies are great. Love the short story aspect and dialogue between characters.

Princess Bride.

Not many comedies being listed, probably because comedy is so subjective and broad, but there needs to be some comedies on this list.

I would say Christmas Vacation is a perfect movie. A Christmas Story, too.

I would love to see the top ten or so movies listed at a screening at a movie theater with some director discussion and cuts shown that were taken out.

If you take say the top 20 movies listed and looked at scenes deleted and said good decision then you are looking at some perfect movies IMO regardless of genre

well what do you call a perfect movie?

I Mean how do you define it other than by really liking it, and maybe recognizing that it is ground breaking on some way.

Awards? Cause I've seen some really ****ty award movies.

Most of the movies people are
Listing here do both.

Even cannonball run. If you don't like freedom, cars, big star casts, boobs, and ridiculous irreverent comedies, it's not for you. But I do and it certainly set a standard for all that. So in that space, it was damn near perfect.

Perfect movie =
Original, never seen anything like it
Never have to look at your watch, don't want it to end
Acting - you forget you're watching actors, they become the role
Script - totally memorable, quotable lines
Soundtrack - whether composed or choosing the right songs

Many great choices listed
Shawshank - the music, the story, you are never watching Tim Robbins or Morgan Freeman- you are watching Andy and Red
Jurassic Park - John Williams at his best, Ian Malcolm's quotes
Dances with Wolves - epic
Goodfellas - perfect song choices (Layla at the end- wow!)

Based on your definition, I wholeheartedly agree. When that one ended, I told my buddy that I was actually ready for 3 more hours. Beautifully shot movie with one of the best scores and memorable characters.

My wife's is Casa Blanca. She thinks the casting, the character interaction, the music, and the lighting all play together perfectly.

Shawshank was sooo close for me, but I wish they had cast someone else as Tommy. I never bought into his performance.

I'd add:
Life is Beautiful
Glengarry Glen Ross
The Gods Must Be Crazy
Dancer In The Dark

Rocky IV. Seriously.
Airplane is the perfect comedy.
Braveheart
The Rock
Cinderella Man
LA Confidential
A Beautiful Mind

Guess I have a thing for Russell Crowe.

Yet you didn't mention Gladiator. That vexes me. I'm terribly vexed.

Some great picks in this thread, but I'm going to add one more. I watch this movie at least once per year, just like "It's a Wonderful Life" every Christmas.

Lots of good movies mentioned. Perfect movie for someone would be one they can watch every time it pops up on TV and will drop whatever they are doing at the time.

Surprised no one has mentioned...

If I missed it, I'm sorry, but this one is a terrible choice. It was pretty good up until that point, but the ending totally sucked.
