I know a lot of the usual suspects (Marley, Black Uhuru, Jimmy Cliff, Steel Pulse, Alpha Blondy etc)

Anyone have anything new and exciting I need to listen to? (No UB40 either)

Check out Peter Tosh

He was a member of the Wailers for a while, but then had a solo career. A lot of the early Bob Marley stuff was heavily influenced by Tosh

Check out Dennis Brown. He sings roots reggae, mostly romantic type stuff. He's a legend, and he's really good.

Check out some roots/dub type stuff. Some classics are Burning Spear - Marcus Garvey , The Congos - Heart of the Congos , and the Abyssinians - Satta Massagana.

If you haven't listened to the Harder they Come Soundtrack (mostly jimmy cliff), it has tons of great songs on it, especially the new Deluxe edition which as an extra disc of similar songs.

I'll try to think of more..

Achilles -- Good call on Peter Tosh! Excellent stuff!

Blinn -- I've heard of Burning Spear but never had the opportunity to listen so I'll have to dig one up sometime.

I dig Third World as well, those guys are great! And Burning Spear is excellent as well. If you dig reggae (with some newer influence) it's really good.

All of the reggae I like has been listed, but if you have not listened to much Ben Harper he usually has one or two reggae songs on each album and they are all pretty good.

Peter Tosh is my favorite. Check the albums "No Nuclear War" and "Legalize It". There's also a great documentary about his murder recently out on DVD, "Peter Tosh: Stepping Razor: Red X".

What about the Killer Bees. They had a badass CD back when I was in college.

Don't remember the name, but it was recorded in Berlin. They also, put on an excellent show.

Peter Tosh also has a GREAT live album recorded at...(can't remember the exact name now)...a festival in Jamaica. Bob Marley was the headliner, but Tosh supposedly stole the show. The shows had a lot to do with bringing the two major political parties in Jamaica (who had been at war) together. Great stuff. Great cd.

Pato Banton

Wize Up and Never Give In are couple of his better albums.

Also, Yellow Man and Eek Mouse are pretty good as I recall.
