I have to admit, I don't know much about whatever genre you would call Rush, but I do love music, and I've noticed that every Styx song I've ever heard sounds like a crappy version of Rush songs (not that I think Rush is great or anything either).

For folks who know more than me, what is the music experts' opinion on these two bands?

It's just "Rush". [/Gene Simmons from the Beyond The Lighted Stage documentary]

Rush was kind of a progressive rock band to me. Styx was like Kansas, REO, and Boston in the group they called corporate Rock back then.

All those bands were a huge part of my childhood though.

I'm not a fan of either, but I don't think Styx is anything like Rush. Maybe a poor man's Boston is more accurate.

I like them both and agree with this analogy

Did Geddy Lee ever sing into the eyes of an accordion player? I don't think so, point for Styx

I've always liked both. Most of that is probably due to hearing my brother blast both of them growing up.

Met Tommy Shaw in Vegas - he was playing acoustic sets with Jack Blades (Night Ranger) and it was great - check out Shaw/Blades on YouTube. Super nice guy even though my wife mistook him for David Spade!
Styx had 4 years they were on top of the rock world. And still tours on those 4 years of songs, maybe 7 or 8 classic rock standards.
Rush is … Rush. Best rock trio ever, 3 of the very best musicians at their respective instruments and a catalog of rock that could fill a 5 hour set list of rock classic after rock classic.
And to OP the 2 bands aren't anything alike.

I think the best 3 or 4 songs from Styx are better than Rush's.

From an individual and technical stand point, Geddy, Alex and particularly Neil were all master level musicians.
It's just tough for me to get past Lee's vocal style.

Styx doesn't suck. They are just different from Rush.

For me, Styx has some incredible songs and a lot of trash. Rush has lots of incredible songs with very little trash.

I would say they are both light prog rock for most of their long careers.

I like both bands, Rush is one of my top 5 all time though.

Sorry.
