A Top Gun Honest Trailer video mentioned that Tom Cruise was one of the few actors who have avoided playing in a superhero movies. So I was trying to think of others. This is what I got so far:

Tom Cruise
Leonardo Decaprio
Daniel Day Lewis
Jon Hamm
Matt Damon
Mel Gibson

He was in The Dark Tower - not sure if that's really superhero but it was a Marvel comic.

Not sure if we're counting tv shows, but Jon Hamm was in both MODOK and Legion

Given the kinds of roles he takes in general, I wouldn't be surprised to find him in a mainline movie at some point

But it was a Stephen King book before that, so not an original comic book character.

It's a series of books so definitely not.

I think Indy would disqualify him, since that's basically a superhero franchise.

Pacino was in Dick Tracy, which is based on a comic.

He probably counts in the spirit of the question, but not technically.

It didn't come from a comic book and he doesn't have any special powers.

If we're doing it that way, then Cruise is DQ'ed for Mission Impossible and Damon for the Bourne movies.

Good call, I haven't seen or thought about that movie since it came out whenever that was.

Cruise was in the Mummy reboot which was supposed to jumpstart a shared cinematic universe. Not comic, but certainly inspired by the comic craze of the last 15 years.

I think if we expand this to include franchises / tentpoles, the list gets pretty damn short.

Cruise has M:I, Damon has Bourne, Gibson has Lethal Weapon, Hanks has Toy Story, etc.

It might actually come down to DDL and DiCaprio.

I guess maybe Hamm too from the OP, but I he's a couple tiers down from everyone else mentioned.

By the same logic being Han Solo would also disqualify him.

I do think there's kind of a "spirit of the question" which is what actors have avoided being in these major IP multi-film franchises, versus the technical question which is whether they've been in movies based on comics.

Deniro and Streep are good picks too. Although a bit of a grey area with the Mamma Mia movies.

That's what it was. I put the question mark because I thought he might have been in something but couldn't remember for sure.

I was about to say despite all odds that I think technically Keanu Reeves fits but apparently Constantine was based on a comic.

We're really stretching the limits of this question if we're talking about Mamma Mia

I think I will draw the line on movies that were based off comic books. So Batman yes, Star Wars no. Even if later a comic book was inspired by the movie.

(No on Mamma Mia, Indiana Jones, etc.)

The other day I wore my Big Trouble in Little China "It's all in the reflexes" shirt to the dentist.

The lady at the counter said, "Oh I like your shirt!"

I said, "Really? Not a lot of people have even seen this movie."

She said, "Oh, well I love anything Patrick Swayze is in."

He was on screen for less than 1 second so I don't know if he counts.

The second one was a sequel to a pretty huge box office hit, so i think it counts as a franchise.

If you don't count his very first movie (Critters 3), and no one does, DiCaprio has never even done a sequel.
