Anyone else see this yet? Solid film. Really enjoyed the fun portrayal of far West Texas life. Ashton Kutcher really delivers as the smooth talking sophisticate.

We need way more of these coming to theaters

It's not a hit piece on gun owners in Texas and making fun of Whataburger-loving rednecks? That is what the trailer looked like.

Dude cannot carry a movie IMO.

I saw the preview and expected the same thing. Actually a Great twist on what the preview makes it look like. Very charming film

He hasn't been the same since he got stuck using a closet as an office by Jim Halpert.

Do you not realize how hard up for entertainment the movie going crowd has become

If that Jo Koy movie is a success that will prove your hypothesis.

The trailer did not do that.

Saw it tonight and really liked it. Lot of Texas laughs with an end I didn't see coming. Solid film

Saw it and it's good for a few laughs, but the ending is over the top.

It goes back and forth between being a love letter to Texas and a love letter to liberal New York elitism.

Some funny parts though.

At a rodeo there's a running tu gag and the protagonist has to Shazam "Deep in the Heart of Texas".

Saw it over the weekend and was really looking forward to it.

Generally a creative film and hits some stereotypes of West Texas. I grew up in Midland, and parties out in the middle of the desert is a thing.

BJ Novak was clever and did some decent research on Texas but kinda agree that he seemed stretched to deliver a feature film. I got some good laughs. Ashton Kutcher is portrayed as a goof in the trailer, but is anything but that in the film.

I hated the ending. It got way to cerebral and meta for me and seemed wildly unrealistic.

I read that none of it was actually filmed in Texas, but rather in New Mexico...I think because of tax reasons?

Quote:

New Mexico provides a largely untapped landscape full of ranches, mountains, and wonderous rock formations for budding and veteran directors. Furthermore, the state promotes in-state shooting to boost the local economy by offering manifold benefits. As per the local film tax credit, eligible productions can avail of 25 to 35 percent tax reimbursement, which makes the southern state a hotspot for movie and television productions.

Yep, if it has forests, it's probably filmed in Georgia. If it has deserts, mountains, or plains, it's probably filmed in NM.

Texas used to have a lot more film/tv production. The tax incentives were steadily killed over the last decade so production companies went elsewhere - as you said New Mexico, Georgia, Canada. It is pretty sad. We used to have a ton of production activity all over the state. There is still some, but it's not as much as it could/should be.

And to try to bring this back on track to the thread, hoping to get to see this one this week. I like Novak and the trailer seems interesting.

I had seen a preview a month or two ago and it caught my interest. Saw it tonight and liked it. I'm not a native Texan, so I appreciated humor that came from poking at the all things that are uniquely Texan. Some was over the top, but it seemed all in good fun to me. I got quite a few good laughs.

There were a few scenes that seemed kind of red state vs blue state, but I felt like the writing was making fun/pointing out the hypocrisy of the blue side, too.

The ending also caught be by surprise and reminded me that it is trying to be a serious movie and not just a farce/parody. I thought the overall message was good and worth hearing.

Really enjoyed it. I thought the final act was a little bit disjointed and rushed. But overall, it was a heartfelt, unique movie, that also gave me quite a few laughs.

Saw it last night and really enjoyed it. I like a movie that takes me on a journey I didn't see coming, and this one certainly did.

Plus, some great laughs regarding tu, Whataburger, and all things Texan.

Saw this last weekend... mixed feelings for sure.

Hits/Accurate:
*Texans love of Whataburger
*Parties in the middle of nowhere
*Rural folk being more up to speed on tech that city folk think
*The maze of law enforcement jurisdictions. Was surprised they left out a 5th option, the Texas Rangers.
*Small town wanna be gang-bangers not so tough as they seem on the surface.
*All the signs & crap on the walls on the house. 100% (see what I did there?)

Strains credibility:
*Ashton Kutcher's character. He acted well, but dudes like him in a small Texas town don't exist IMO.
*1980's pickup trucks with guns on racks. That era is over.
*Cholo agreeing to do an interview with a NY Jewish guy.
*Blowing up the Prius. Nvmd. This is an accurate portral of Tceh.
*Dude couldn't figure out the phone code more quickly.

Wasn't he supposed to be in Marfa? There are a few folks like that in Marfa.

Yep! You're right. Marfa is definitely the exception to the rule. A guy like that could exist in Marfa, any other small Texas town (Hearne for example) he's likely getting his a$$ beat on principle.

Yup. That person doesn't exist in Bremond or anywhere else in Robertson County.

Was decent, worth the stream. The most unbelievable part was

the family let him stay at the house after he admitted the truth and basically told them all to *****themselves…and the shooting

I really like this. Thought it was a creative, original idea that was a pretty good portrayal of both sides involved. The ending with Ashton and what he does with podcast were surprising and maybe a stretch, but it worked fine did me. Worth checking out and it's streaming on Peacock.

Just watched it. Loved it. It took everything about my hometown town, how I grew up, my family, etc, beefed up the stereotypes just right and worked it into a decent movie. I enjoyed it for what it was.

amazingly I just said this to my parents yesterday -

that they never actually showed Abilene so they could have been filming anywhere in the world lol...
