Alright, here’s a list of the most anticipated movies of the summer…
TROY (5/14)
- It’s getting decent reviews, but nothing spectacular. From what I'm hearing and have read, Orlando Bloom overacts his role to the point of it being annoying, the music is nothing inspiring (since they brought in replacement composer James Horner at the last minute), and the huge battle scenes (not the one-on-one fighting) are poorly executed from a director's standpoint. However, apparently both Brad Pitt and Eric Bana steal the show. I read the script about a year ago and thought it was amazing. My only complaint would be that it didn't feel epic enough. It felt a little too confined the last 3/4 of the way seeing as though every other scene either takes place inside the walls of Troy or on the beaches right outside - and they just keep going back and forth. But hopefully they'll pull it off.
VERDICT: If nothing else, Brad Pitt's Achilles character is a freakin' bad ass and will definitely have me there opening weekend.
SHREK 2 (5/19)
- I thought the first one was great, heard the second one is just as good (based on recent test screenings).
VERDICT: I’ll be there opening weekend, matinee.
THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW (5/28)
- I don't know why, but I absolutely love movies like this. There has been one test screening so far (that's been reported) and it got pretty good reviews. It's by the guy who did Independence Day, Godzilla, and The Patriot.
VERDICT: Opening weekend, Friday night.
HARRY POTTER 3 (6/04)
- I saw the first one, didn’t see the second one, but the dark feel and look of the trailer for this one makes me want to go back and watch the first sequel.
VERDICT: First couple of weeks, matinee.
THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK (6/11)
- The sequel to Pitch Black. From the new trailer that was released the other day, it looks interesting and has some pretty cool production design, but I just don't know. I'm not a huge Vin Diesel fan and this one may be a little too out there and over the top. However, I read one script review that said it was better than the first Matrix.
VERDICT: I'll believe it when I see it - if I ever do.
THE TERMINAL (6/18)
- Spielberg. Enough said. I loved Catch Me If You Can and this appears to have that same kind of sentimental feel it displayed at times.
VERDICT: Opening weekend, Saturday night.
SPIDER-MAN 2 (6/30)
- I thought the first one was OK, it just felt a little to cheesy. But after seeing the trailer to this one - MAN, can't wait. Guaranteed highest grossing movie of the summer.
VERDICT: Opening night.
ANCHORMAN (7/7)
- I absolutely LOVE Will Ferrell. This is another one I had the privilege to read and I can promise you this thing delivers. If you want details, just ask and I’ll post them. Otherwise, mark my words - Anchorman will be a classic in the same sense as Tommy Boy and Billy Madison. In other words, every male between the ages of 13 and 35 will own the DVD.
VERDICT: First one in line.
- But if you’d like to know what Will Ferrell is REALLY truly capable of, I wrote a script review for another potential project of his here:

I, ROBOT (7/16)
- I’m still trying to make up my mind. After last year’s Matrix and Terminator movies, is it really time for robots to take over, again? Still looks interesting though.
VERDICT: First week, matinee.
THE BOURNE SUPREMACY (7/23)
- The sequel to The Bourne Identity. I enjoyed the first one and this one looks to be a slight step above.
VERDICT: Opening week, matinee.
THE VILLAGE (7/30)
- I think I’m the only person alive who likes Unbreakable. Dug Signs, but not as much. Seeing as though this one’s also by Shyamalan - and the latest trailer is awesomely spooky - I can’t wait. Although, if what I’ve heard of the surprise ending is true, brace yourself – it could be VERY disappointing. Hopefully it was all a rumor.
VERDICT: Opening night.
GARDEN STATE (7/30 – limited cities at first)
- Count me in for this one. I love Scrubs and I love quirky coming of age movies.
VERDICT: Opening night, whenever it gets to College Station.
COLLATERAL (8/6)
- Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx is a great combination. Michael Mann (The Insider, Ali) usually delivers.
VERDICT: Opening weekend, matinee.
