Just listened to Simmons & co on The Prestige Podcast recapping the finale, and they think the best play for season two would be to combine the next *two* Lakers seasons. The way they broke it down, and in doing a bit of my own research, I now honestly can't see season two going any other way, as it's just too perfect...

- In the wake of the championship, at the urging of Magic, Buss signs Paul Westhead to a three-year deal.

- Magic starts out as the golden boy, but misses 45 games during the '80/'81 season due to a knee injury.

- Bird and the Celtics win the '81 championship.

- Post-injury, during the '80/'81 season, and into the '81/'82 season, Magic grows frustrated with Westhead's style of play, which became increasingly centered around Kareem, in Magic's absence.

- Eventually, Magic basically forces Westhead out - as the two trade jabs in the press - leading to Buss firing Westhead mid-season, in November '81. During all of this, Magic is painted as the villain by the press/Lakers fans (he's apparently even booed at one point).

- Pat Riley is named the new head coach.

- The Lakers then go on to the win the champion that same season, in '82, wherein Magic is redeemed.

So, basically, across two basketball seasons, Magic becomes a villain of sorts, while, at the same time, we finally see the rise of Riley. Then, together, Magic and Riley go on to win the championship, becoming the Showtime Lakers of the '80s we know and love. Adrian Brody takes on more of a leading role, throw in the drama between Jeanie and the Buss brothers, and you've got yourself the makings of pretty great season of TV right there.
Can't wait to listen to it...did Bill go off on a rant about the monkey line?

On a tangent but I love the rewatchables podcast with Simmons, Ryan and Fennessy. Just a great 1 -1.5 hour podcast breaking down a movie into several categories and I always find out something new.

Anyway, back to your post...I agree I can't see them drawing out the '81 season into 10 episodes and you can't have your Oscar winner as the assistant coach for two full seasons. I can't wait, it should be fantastic and maybe by then the SCOTUS will hear the Logo's lawsuit lol.

I think the center square on the bill simmons bingo board has to be cocaine. For a guy he claims he's never done it, he LOVES to talk cocaine. It's almost a guarantee on every podcast he's gonna bring it up. 80's sports, cocaine, directors of the 80's, cocaine.
I can't unhear it now.

Ha, yeah, Simmons mocks the racist thing throughout the episode. Like saying Bird will finally become the Grand Wizard in season two as well, etc. It's hilarious.

And yeah, right there with you on The Rewatchables. Love that pod so much.

Somewhat related was the Rewatchables on Hoosiers and they of course spend a little time on Bird and I forgot how they brought it up but apparently Bird was so poor he only had one shirt that he would wear all the time at Indiana to the point where it would stink something awful. His teammates made fun of him and Bobby Knight didn't stick up for him or recognize his talent so he quit the team and went back to French Lick. Simmons couldn't resist and quipped "Bobby Knight, are we sure he was good?"

Waiting for them to show the 1984 era as that's when the Goat Michael Jordan enters the league. Bulls played the Lakers Dec 2, 1984 they won the game and Jordan let everyone know what was coming.

Orlando Woolridge really dominated this game and Jordan was a bit stymied by Cooper but they still won. Kareem's skyhook was a powerful weapon and such a graceful shot.

I'm not sure this would be a game they showcase in the show. Also, who the hell do you get to play him???

Michael Jordan is the obvious choice.

I just want the moment from the Dream Team scrimmage.

Quote:

"But I'm gonna tell you the moment that really got us. So, we got back to the hotel, right. And so, the NBA had built a nice lounge for the players. And so, Michael's up there and he's smoking on his cigar. Larry and I just sitting there, having a Coke or whatever. And he says, guys, and he put his hand on my shoulder, put his hand on Larry's shoulder. And said, 'Guys, there's a new sheriff in town.' And so we was like, 'oh man, what can we say?' We said, 'You know what? You're right, it's your league now.'"

I doubt they lean into the Jordan stuff much as this is about the Showtime Lakers that basically ended with their '87 title. Yes Jordan had the incredible 63 point game against the Celtics in the '86 playoffs but Boston won that series easily.

Jordan's main competition was Isiah Thomas and the Bad Boys of Detroit (and the Knicks as well) before he ripped off 6 titles in 8 years so I just don't see them doing a lot with him. Also, as I stated before it will be very hard to find someone to portray him. It's one thing to high dribble and throw no look passes but a completely different ballgame to emulate the GOAT.

Season 2 is rumored to be Shaq Kobe and Phil, if you want Jordan watch the Last Dance.. (and I'm a huge 23 fan)

I can see them skipping most of the Bulls era, although I'd prefer to keep it going with the current cast and story, I thought it was great. I am going to watch the real Magic documentary on Apple TV next

That would be odd if a series about the showtime Lakers had one season about that team and then jumped 20 years to a whole different team. Not sure I believe that.

Besides, there's plenty of story to tell before they get into Jordan's Bulls. We've just started the Magic/Bird rivalry.

Agree with BowSowy! The creators did such a good job compiling a stellar cast who really capture their subjects. To throw that away and ignore the three NBA finals series with the Celtics would be a waste.

not to mention they chose to open the entire Winning Time series by showing Magic contracting HIV and his press conference. not sure they'd do that if they didn't plan to revisit it later.

I saw that HBO licensed Pearlman's second book, which covers the Shaq/Kobe era, so I assume HBO will get to that eventually. But I agree there is more juice to be squeezed from the Magic era first.

If this show had been made 20 years ago, I could have made an excellent Kurt Rambis.

My older brother is a bit of a hermit, who teaches, and thus does nothing all summer. I've been busting his balls to watching Winnin' Time since it came out in May. It is a perfect show for him, who sort of fell in love with sports backwards, not caring that much about them as a kid and then getting into it, especially the history, as an adult.

He finally started watching it about 2 weeks ago and binged the whole season in one day.

New docu-series on Hulu covers the Lakers' dynasty, directed by Antoine Fuqua. Starts with Buss buying the team and will go through the LeBron years. Interesting wrinkle is that it also includes the other Buss children and how they were involved in the family business. Will eventually cover the family fight for who would control the Lakers after Jerry. Only 4 episodes so far but it's very good.

Watching it really makes you appreciate the casting for Winning Time. Every actor perfectly captures their real counterpart, including Jerry West.
