Aaron Lewis has some excellent songs in his catalog. By no means does he fall into the modern country genre.
Cody Jinks is another that started out in rock, although I don't think he was very successful there.

I saw him open for Korn a few months ago. I had almost forgotten he had music other than the cheesy stuff I remember him for.

Yeah Aaron Lewis is actually good country too. I like a lot of his stuff.

Nelly's last album was a hip hop album featuring country musicians. In other words it was a modern country album and it sounds terrible.
