Encanto just shows how being a musical with good music can carry a Disney movie.

Raya was way more in my wheelhouse of the type of story I'm interested in as like a Fantasy nerd, but I have really no interest in ever watching it again. With the musicals they can tell a ****load of story in a couple minutes and skip having to show you a bunch of boring filler just to get the plot points in, and then if the music is actually good (as it has been in the best Disney musicals), then just hearing the songs is also almost like watching those scenes from the movie every time you hear the catchy song. They're way more memorable and iconic because of it. Just from a plot standpoint, Encanto is a very boring character driven story with no action at all. Without music it would have sucked because you wouldn't care about the characters at all, important parts of character arcs and development are in the songs.
This. Also a perfect explanation for why Coco is top-tier; it had it all.

My kids loved it. I liked it. There was so much of the story told through song, and they sing so friggin fast in places that it wasn't always easy to follow. I agree with others who say it was predictable and not as good as Coco, but that doesn't make it bad. Still a good disney film.
I liked the music better in Encanto but as a whole movie I definitely like Coco better.

Sadly, it grows on you

movie was okay. Couple of nitpicks:

  • Bruno had been living in the walls this whole time, and the cousin with the super hearing didn't know about it?
  • Grandma was a total B***, and then everything is fine
  • After all that work, Mirabel doesn't get any powers. I guess she got the POWER OF LOVE, DUN, DUN, DUN, do, do, do, do dooo, DUN, DUN, DUN. DON'T NEED MONEY, DON'T TAKE FAME......

The cousin mentions at the end of the film that she had heard him the whole time.

Dolores did hear him. Even earlier in the movie she references him as if he was still in the house unlike other characters and sings background lines like "I can hear him right now"

It seems like Mirabel just got the grandmothers power.

The power of the house muffled the sounds of Bruno in the walls according to my kids

The super-hearer mentions that the rats are making strange noises early on in the movie too.

My interpretation is that Casita didn't give Mirabel powers because she was the next Abuela to safeguard the family. When Abuela passes on, Mirabel will be the family matriarch.
good point. What about Abuela's room? Mirabel had to stay in the nursery. Abuela had a magic door, but her room looks plain. Would've made more sense for her to have a room, but no powers, but then that probably would have clued in everyone in the family that she was the next matriarch.

Yes us too but my kids are still watching it. I thought the plot was weaker, but the music and animation was right on par with Coco. Maybe the music in Encanto was perhaps a bit better?

Coco is in many ways better because the plot represented the Mexican culture in a way that no other animated movie has; it's supernatural plot is appealing to many other cultures who have similarities in theirs.

Coco is one of the best MOVIES ever made IMHO, not just animated or Disney, great story, great execution and great music. Moana was also a great movie IMHO

I never got into or for that matter GAS about animated or Disney movies until 2013 when we had our daughter and they hit the radar. I can honestly say Disney is light years ahead of the other companies, even the weaker Disney stuff is better than most of their competition.

Disney Animation had a big lull after Tarzan. Pixar was doing its thing, but Disney really got into a good run with their CGI movies starting with Tangled.

Tangled, Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, Moana, and now Encanto.

I haven't seen Frozen or Moana but I really enjoyed all the others. Wreck It Ralph in particular.

I think in retrospect this might be looked at as a new golden age for Disney.

How have you not seen Frozen or Moana? I've probably seen them more than you've watched Star Wars.

As amazing as Wreck it Ralph was, I couldn't believe the disaster that was the second one.

Frozen, like Encanto is carried by exceptional music and effects.

I'll be honest, I forgot there was a second, although I did watch it. Didn't mind it though, thought it was pretty good.

What made it such a disaster for you?

Princess and the Frog, which came out a year before Tangled, is also great.

Prior to that the Disney Animation Studios had a long line of forgettable films that were not musicals. Bolt, Meet the Robinsons, Chicken Little, Brother Bear, Treasure Planet, Atlantis. They also made the truly awful musical Home on the Range, but even as bad as it is its still more fun to watch than pretty much all of the others of its decade prior to Princess and the Frog besides Lilo and Stitch

Onward was pretty good too, my daughter always cries at the end

Disney+ gets the stuff out pretty quick too so our daughter is able to watch on her tablet or streams directly to her TV's.

My 24 month / two year old will sit and watch this all day without issues. Has prob seen it 50 times. He watches all cartoons and movies in Spanish though…. So I have no idea what's going on

Both Frozens are alright, but I hate the parenting in them.

My daughter loves frozen so much that when frozen 2 came out she wore her formal Elsa gown from bibity bobity boutique @ Disneyland to the opening and she wasn't the only little girl wearing an Elsa dress lol. TBH frozen is not as good as the other franchises IMHO, nearly every other movie is better. Little girls still get twisted up in it though.

99 days out of 100 I am perfectly happy being a #girldad, the frozen days, not so much.

There was a while that my daughters refused to watch ANY other animated movies besides Frozen/Frozen 2, now that has shifted to Encanto which is much more tolerable

I don't know, there are days where sailing away from your kids and to your death seems like a solid parenting strategy.

Just watched this for the first time with the family. As others have said, it's very meh. Soundtrack was solid. It seemed like the only one that got into it was the wife. Two daughters (granted one of them is only one and a half) were not into it. But if I would've turned on Moana or Frozen they would've been fully engaged. May try it again later in the year but honestly we preferred Raya over Encanto. But I agree Moana and Coco are on another level. My two cents.
