I think he actually has become a good actor, he was just too good in that kind of role for about 5 or so years.

Guy had great chemistry with The Rock in The Rundown which ended up being The Rocks big break to show off he can make dang good movies..always thought they'd get paired up again but never happened

He has pretty extensive arm/hand tattoos now which makes me wonder if that significantly impacts his acting opportunities as it would be an added production expense to cover them up when it's out of character.

He went off the deep end after he walked in on Eddie K. Thomas nailing his Mom.

My guess is dude was just typecast and has yet to get offered a role to help him break out of that. Hope he gets his chance.

So your theory is an actor of his stature who makes probably 7 figures in a film is being held back by maybe $300 daily of coverup makeup work?

Possibly, I really don't know what the expense would be for makeup or CG but I do think it limits his options, especially with some of the recent copyright lawsuits/licensing requirements related to tattoos.

I (sadly) enjoyed The Rundown... not sure how it didn't win best picture.

That's when I realized that The Rock would be pulling off roles that rivaled the best of Sean Penn, from an acting standpoint.
