TLDR: Enjoying my LP much more, now.
So, it's been bothering me that I just wasn't getting the tones out of my LP like I hear on various records and on various YouTube channels, so I've spent the last coupe of days going down the rabbit hole on my LP tone quest. I think i've finally found a great place to be in my setup, but damn that was a lot of work. I literally just plug my Tele into the front of a tweed amp and it's tone heaven.
One of my biggest issues with LP guitars has always been the woofy and muddy neck pickup. I listen to guys like Joe Bonamassa or Jimmy page play on the neck pickup all the time and they have beautiful articulate tones. The "Tone is all in the fingers" crowd is full of ***** They have setup their entire tone stack to give them those articulate edge of breakup tones when rolling the volumes off their neck pickups.
One of the best videos I found I think was from Joe Bonamassa (could be someone else, but I've probably watched over 30 videos on this topic over the last 2 days). The best advice he gave, imo, was when you are setting up your amp and pedals for a LP, always set it to get the perfect neck pickup tone, not the bridge pickup tone. So I removed my D&M Drive and Tumnus drive pedals off my board and threw my MXR 10 band eq back into the mix as the first pedal in the chain. Started playing with all 10 bands to understand better how they effect my overall guitar tone.
Tone shaping those lower to muddy mid frequencies out and boosting the right higher frequencies, I was able to finally dial in as close to that perfect neck tone as I've had. Once I got the default EQ settings set, I then just set the neck tone knob on my LP to around 5-6 and roll the volume down to to around 5-6. Granted, this only works if your guitar has 50's wiring for your pickups.
Sure enough, i've now been playing the last couple of hours with as close to that neck tone as I've ever been. It's been amazing to finally hear those kinds of tones. I think the only way I could get an even better tone is if I backed off my attenuator and let the amp go full blast.
For the bridge, my normal setting is now pretty much always at 5-6 on the tone knob and 9 on the volume. Saw another Joe vid where he said his standard bridge "full tone up" is always at 5 and his volume at 9. You can then push that volume to 10 if you want to push a little louder for a solo or something.
It's amazing how many sounds I can get out of my LP now by blending the pickups or fiddling with the vol and tone pots. Been having a lot of fun all morning.
Anyways, just thought I'd share with yall in case anyone was also going through a similar tone journey.
