Here's a quick lesson:
The 2-3-4 strings (B-G-D) form an (inverted) open G chord.
Use 1 finger to bar (that means press down!) those same 3 strings at the 3rd fret.
Do the same thing at the 5th fret.
Those 3 chords are G, Bb, and C; or 1, flat 3, and 4.

Now just work on the rhythms - slowly.
Add a little dirt from your Boss amp.
You'll be playing Bad To The Bone, Tush, La Grange, and plenty of other blues songs in no time.

You can take lessons to learn how to use the other 3 strings. Enjoy!

Alright guitar players,

I might have purchased my first tube amp off of fb marketplace. And it takes pedals well.

What is a solid distortion pedal for metal? I have read and watched so far that Metal Zone from Boss is the "worst pedal ever".

I will probably get an Ibanez tube screamer in the mix like my friend Kirk Hammett.

Thankfully this board allows some humor.

It's working! LPB-1 Boost. Going to mod it into an overdrive/fuzz. With guidance of course. Working on understanding schematics.

A breadboard? It allows you to test out circuits without having to solder anything. You just stick the part ends into the pinholes and a current runs through it. This one is designed for testing out guitar pedal circuits, specifically. I'm using it as an educational tool, but eventually I could use it to design my own pedal circuits.

Once I'm comfortable with reading schematics and kind of understand how it all works together, I'll purchase some prefabricated circuit boards, parts, enclosure, etc. and build a guitar pedal to put on my pedalboard.

It's fun! Until you mess up one solder joint at some point and only the on/off light works. I mean, that's what I hear at least.

Is it a clean amp? What kind of metal are we talking about?

For distortion/preamps into a clean amp I like the KSR Ceres preamp for more modern metal tones. Universal Audio also recently released 5150 and Dual Rectifier preamp pedals for more 90's/00's tones. I have the 5150 one (called the Anti) and it sounds great. Friedman also has a bunch of "amp in a box" pedals that cop his tones (classic Marshall to more modded Marshall tones). Should be tons of YouTube videos on all of these (probably less so with the KSR). Forgot about the Diezel VH4 pedal - my favorite amp of all time and the pedal holds its own if you like the Diezel sound. All of the above are relatively pricey FYI>

Of course there's also the modeler units so you could try dozens of high gain heads as preamps. Not my thing but there's tons of those out there from very cheap to incredibly expensive.

For something a little cheaper, Boss IR-2 should work into a clean amp. Has 9 or 10 models in it from Fender Tweeds to high gain. Tons of YouTube videos.

I ended up picking this Laney Super Cub 10 off of Facebook market place for $280. Gently used from first owner. I looked online and they go for $600+ new. So I thought it was a great deal.

And introduction into the tube tone world and it's 6 Watts so it's perfect for my current life circumstance with a house full of small kiddos.

The reviews say it takes pedals well. I have had a blast playing on it so far with my Les Paul. Anyone else have any experience with Laney amps?

I'm looking for a 80s/90s metal sound (Pantera, Metallica, megadeth)

You have listed some great pedal recs. Thank you.

I've been looking at a Lionheart but haven't yet decided.

The only experience I have with Laney is that an Ag that played in a band with my big brother years ago got a Laney head and a cabinet of some sort back in the day, and he dialed in a very George Lynch/Warren DeMartini tone, and he could rip on that fretboard. And it all sounded really good.

Took just over a month but I finally got the Custom 24 back from getting the 85/15s installed. They sound nice. Now to get the PRS #6 pups sold.

Yeah. Now I know why people prefer tube regardless of how good digital amps sound. So warm and bright.

I generally know how but push pulls make my head spin and I absolutely hate trying to get pickups and their springs into pickup rings. Absolute hell on earth trying to do that.

Danny D's was massively backed up apparently. They let me know that going in, but I didn't expect it to take as along as it did.

Finally decided to post my 1960 Reissue Les Paul on Reverb. Was playing both my RI and my '02 LP Standard and just couldn't justify keeping a $4,000 LP I barely play when I have a fantastic Standard. The RI is definitely a little more resonant and all the strings ring out a little more clearly, but not $1,700 more. Granted, I won't be entertaining any offers for less than $4,400. I don't NEED to sell it and have no problem sitting on it for 6-12 months.

Will probably swap the Custombuckers back in when if it sells. I can sell the Throbak pickups for $600 separately, as a pair. Though I will give the buyer to option to keep them, if they want to spend that additional dollar amount.

So glad you went with the Laney for the kind of music you're going for.

I was cringing hard earlier when you were talking about AC15's and Fender HRD's (but didn't want to thread-crap).

About pedals - not doing a bit here - seriously do think about the MetalZone, but run as a preamp (guitar -> MT2 -> effects loop return) into the Laney poweramp rather than the input jack. Your local GC probably has a used one for ~$60.

Other suggestions:
- The ProCo Rat will do late 80s/early 90s hard rock really well.
- The old ToneLok Ibanez SM-7 smash box will do late 90s/early00s nu-metal gain REALLY well - especially if you run it into a graphic EQ pedal afterward. Try that in the effects loop too and see what you think.
- Revv G3 for modern and down-tuned current metal sounds.

Thanks man.

You picked my favorite YouTuber….WILL IT CHUG?!

Somehow I haven't seen that one. Yeah, I'm Glad the Laney has the pre-amp FX loop. What a difference it made when you run the pedal through that instead of input jack. The tone from the video was what I have been searching for , for a very long time! So heavy yet crisp.

I'll go further down the rabbit hole this evening with your other recommendations.

Pffffft, unpossible! I'm on the verge honestly, and I definitely have too many high-powered amps:

-Reeves Custom 50 Head
-Verellen Loucks 100 Head
-Mesa Boogie F50 Head
-1968 Fender Twin Reverb

Thinking about selling the Verellen and Twin and getting a 1x12" Tone King, Magnatone, or similar. Something that I can actually cart around, but still will sound great at home or on stage.
