Is the raunchy teen/college comedy genre dead forever?

The Revenge of the Nerds remake thread got me thinking. From the 70's to the 00's you had some pretty funny and classic movies made in this genre. Animal House, Porkies, Revenge of the Nerds, PCU, American Pie series, Fast Times, Superbad, and even Old School would count. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.

There were common themes in a lot of these movies. Chasing ass, lewd behavior, objectification of women, often attempts to impair women with alcohol for sex, homophobic and ethnic slurs galore, etc. Not saying I don't find all of these films and issues humorous because I do. But it seems times have definitely changed for a lot of this. These movies have a special place for anyone growing up in that era. But it seems younger people cringe at them. Often finding no humor at all in them. When was the last of these made? Is there even still a market?

Porky's is hands-down the funniest movie I have ever seen. Seriously, the howling coach just kills me along with the fat female coach describing the male sex organ.

Probably Neighbors, right? Really the only people doing any of that still are the James Franco, Seth Rogen squad.

In today's PC/Snowflake cancel culture environment, I think that genre might be dead unfortunately....

saw some david spade movie this year that was kind of in that vein.

I think they've evolved a bit. I'd say Easy A, Blockers, Good Boys, Booksmart, even Eighth Grade are all sort of takes that evolved out of that genre.

There are two sequences in Porky's that make me laugh so hard that I can barely breath ...

when the big black guy bursts through the wall of the house out in the 'glades with that big machete
the sequence in the principal's office with Ms. Ballbreaker (?) and the coaches, with the young guy suggesting to bring in a police sketch artist to get a picture of the offending *****.

The only sequence I can think of with a similar response is the cafeteria line with John Belushi stuffing his pants, his mouth, and his tray with all the food ... culminating with the sly look he gives right before slurping down the jello.

I do think the sensitivity issues have limited these to an extent. Especially ones about HS b/c they delve too deeply into issues that are more in the forefront in terms of bullying, statutory rape and rape in general, nudity that might involved an implied underage person (though obviously these actors are over 18 and adults playing kids), treating women as sex objects etc. These are just tabu subjects....Big in the 80's, John Hughes movies were targeted to teens. Today, parents, who grew up watching those very movies, don't want their kids watching those. Too much sex, nudity and adult situations. Ironic given what movies like 16 Candles was to people of my age who loved them. Same with Breakfast Club (no nudity that I remember but plenty of swearing and adult situations) . These are classics. Risky Business? Great movie about a HS kid running a brothel. Imagine that coming out today?!?! LOL!

But, what I've noticed is that these types of films seem to have gravitated to young adult focused situations and now the woman is many times the main character in the movie. Think of Bad Mom's for instance. Brides Maides is another. And those were fun to watch. I'd even argue that Anchor Man, Dodgeball, the previously mentioned Super Bad (It was HS kids) and those types of movies just replaced the T&A comedies. To me, Old School kicked off these movies and that was the direction studios went. Sex in college and older is a safer subject to them as these are adults.

In the end, everything comes around. American Pie was a "modern" take on Porkies type moves. The female characters played a larger role and the story was a bit more sensitive for that time. There were actually a few "hit me in the feels" moments in it where some serious issues were uncovered. Right now, fantasy and action "comic book" movies are massively popular. At some point when that starts to wane, more off the wall comedies like Dodgeball will be back and even some versions of an American Pie type movie. But what we will see is more woman main characters.

This scene appears to be one continuous take as well. I don't know how many times it took to get it all in one take, but it looks like they did. One of the funniest scenes out there.

Easy A was a great movie, but even that is a decade old.

I think most of what made a teen movie back in the 80's, 90's and 00' is now outdated for kids. I think it is a generational thing with all this virtue signaling and shaming anyone for possibly being flawed or just finding comedy in the ridiculousness of everyday life. Kids haven't really changed since then, but they are told they shouldn't feel a certain way or laugh at certain things.

Many of those movies were basically playing off the sexual frustration of being a teenager. For some reason, it is now frowned upon to joke about it. Kids also aren't allowed to make jokes about things that are funny.

Look at That 70's Show. When one of the guys gets too drunk, the others put him in a dress as a joke. Now days, that would be considered transphobic. I'm sorry, but putting your friend in a dress when he passes out IS FUNNY. Hell, seeing a 6ft tall dude-bro in a dress just walking down the street is weird. I can accept your right to do so without having to celebrate it. And... I'm gonna think it's hilarious.

Edit: I find it hilarious how prudish this country was for so long, then people started getting more liberal and pushed the boundaries. Now, entertainment is going so far left that we're going back to repressed. It is just fascinating.

I agree that this genre is mostly dead now and actually have been thinking about the OP's question lately. There will be outliers and it looks like some have pointed some out in this thread but it used to be an entire popular genre. There is no way in hell most of those movies would get made today.

What actually triggered OP's question for me recently was watching the pilot episode of Supernatural. His GF is just sitting around in sexy clothes like it's some kind of every day normal thing when it was clearly done to titillate the male audience. And there was a Halloween party where almost all the girls in it were dressed in hoarish outfits. That kind of blatant sex is just not done anymore outside of super R rated movies. Hell, think back to PG movies in the '80s and how much T&A you would see even in a PG film. Casual nudity was frequent in PG films back in the day and now it's all but extinct.

You point out dudes dressing up as women. That was a regular joke in movies back then as well becasue its damn funny. Kind of like farts are always funny. But, we can't do that anymore because now it's offensive. For the younger folks on here it would probably shock them to know that Rudy Giuliani of all people would frequently dress in drag in SNL skits. Hilarious.

I also think of the character "Long Duk Dong" from 16 Candles. In the 80's we loved that character and we repeated every line of his. They made a gong sound every time someone said his name. There's just no way that's accepted now and looking back it's a huge part of that movie's feel.

Even in Superbad, almost 20 years later, you have Seth referring to Fogle as "F-a-gle" as an insult. No way that flies now.

I really am waiting for that moment when society shames so hard one direction that a truly talented film maker/actor/comedian releases a comedy classic that shakes this modern culture to its core in a way that swings the pendulum back the other day.

People are tired of PC and cancel culture. We just want to laugh and be left alone.

People have just become more puritanical these days and have lost the ability to dissociate comedy from reality.

For example, there was a thread about the best sitcom episodes here the other day, and a poster was on their high horse about the Office episode where Andy doesn't realize he's been dating a girl still in high school. The joke was about as innocent as it gets, and it's funny because it shows that Andy is an oblivious moron who can't read any signs (like going out with her friends and smashing mail boxes). But a certain percentage of people see that now and think, "oh, they are normalizing statutory rape."

Now, I also don't get why if they would take issue with that, and they wouldn't take any issue with the multiple sexual harassment violations Michael commits throughout the series. But my point is that people take anything shown on tv as trying to make a point about our culture today, even if it's just a silly comedy. And they want to censor or eliminate these kinds of jokes from society, because they are puritans.

I don't really think 2020 american culture is "more puritanical" than it was 8yrs ago when the office shot that episode or than 40 yrs ago when the original RoTN came out.

I think there was a lot more T&A in movies in the 80s for a few reasons:
1. There was an almost total lack of readily available porn. You don't get really much shock and or titillation from a random tops pop off scene in 2020 when porn is always a click away.
2. The pg13 rating now means virtually any glorious tittays gets a hard R instead of a PG in a movie.
3. There was sort of a comedy boom from 00-08 of funny movies that could be made for 25mil and earn 90mil that doesn't seem to be part of Hollywood at all today.
4. I think a lot of these types of stories are now tv platform type shows (like pen15 and big mouth).

I think the biggest reason the teen comedy isn't a bigger player nowadays is that teenagers don't go to the movies like they did in past generations. Maybe some topics of movies from the 70s and 80s wouldn't fly these days, but there just isn't the same market for them like there was up to even a decade ago.

Rewatched this recently (on Amazon Prime) and it holds up.
I was surprised because I really only remembered the, um, memorable parts.

That's a good point too. I graduated HS in the 2000's and although we had a spare tv for the kids room growing up, we could only play video games on it or watch DVD's, and didn't have any kind of cable box hooked up to it for most my life. Going to the movies was a good way to get away from your parents with your friends and have something else entertain you cheaply. Now, TVs are cheaper than ever, and you can watch hours upon hours of content with a roku.

When I try to describe my time working at the chicken to someone that didn't go to aTm, I usually start off with "did you ever see Porky's? Well the owner was basically Porky but Texas"

I can't believe how well this scene holds up. When the old coach has to bite down on his fist I lose it.

Similarly, I graduated HS in 2002. Now I have a 14 year old niece. She thinks movies are boring. She watches Youtube and tiktok. It's not even really the near limitless streaming available, it's internet stuff that just simply didn't exist back then.

Edit: This pattern is also showing up in teenagers in growing numbers who don't care about learning to drive/getting their license/getting a car.
