Saw this tonight via a virtual cinema event through the Film at Lincoln Center website, and while I thought was incredibly well done, and McDornand is her usual great self, in any other year it probably wouldn't be the Oscar front runner it is now. It's such a unique story, and a beautifully shot one at that - it looks and feels like a Terrance Malick film, in the best way, sans the mind-numbing voice-over - and, if anything, it felt great just to watch an Oscar movie during Oscar season again, even if from my living room. But, ultimately, to no fault of its own, it also had the unintended consequence of reminding me what we've missed out on this year in terms of traditional, Oscar-worthy fare, where this would definitely be in the mix, but would be, like, the seventh best movie of the year on most critics' lists instead of the first. That said, when it hits traditional theaters on February 19th (and likely digital as well), I would still absolutely seek it out. Again, I don't have a single complaint about the movie itself, it just really made me miss Oscar season and theater-going in general, more than I expected it to.

I should also add that writer/director Chloe Zhao directed Marvel's The Eternals as well. And, after this, I absolutely cannot wait to see what she does with that movie. Her approach and sensibilities seem like they'd be in direct opposition to the Marvel machine, so now I'm so incredibly curious to see what she can bring to a massive, superhero blockbuster, and pretty hopeful as well. We could be in for something special with The Eternals.

Kind off subject but slightly on subject here...

I haven't really been paying attention...are studios delaying releases until next year for potential Oscar worthy movies because of COVID and because they want to release in theaters and be able to participate in a "normal" Academy Award setting?

Yes and no. I'd say a good chunk of the bigger-budget prestige films/potential awards contenders moved, but less because of the unconventional Oscar season and more because of box office, or lack there of.

Potential Oscar films that moved to 2021...

- Dune
- The French Dispatch
- In the Heights
- King Richard
- The Last Duel
- Last Night in Soho
- Macbeth
- No Time to Die
- Top Gun: Maverick
- West Side Story

Potential Oscar films that stayed in 2020...

- The Father
- Mank
- Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
- The Mauritanian
- Minari
- News of the World
- Nomadland
- One Night in Miami
- Pieces of a Woman
- Promising Young Woman
- Sound of Metal
- Tenet
- The Trial of the Chicago 7
- The United States vs. Billie Holiday

Thanks for your response. This is typically my favorite time of year to go to the theater and binge watch... super sucks we can't do it this year. And sad about no Sundance either. So ready for next year!

I searched and searched and couldn't find out to watch Minari. Super intrigued by that one. Heard anything on when/where we will be able to see that?

Thanks again!

Minari will see a super-limited theatrical release this Friday, December 11th, with a gradual rollout that will involve it going as wide as it can theatrically by February 12th, it's "wide" release date. That said, we don't know if that will also include some kind of digital/VOD release at some point, though I sure hope so. Otherwise, I won't be able to see it for months, and it's probably my most anticipated remaining Oscar hopeful.

Am I the only one that wants a west side story/top gun mash up.

You can't tell me that a musical version of Top Gun (complete with snap fights for the dog fight) wouldn't be awesome
