RIP to a legend

When Eddie joined Michael Jackson on stage in Dallas.

Before their debut album broke big, they were touring the country playing small venues. My parents saw them play at a club in Wichita Ks. They got to hang out and have some drinks with them after the show. My mom still has napkin that she had all them autograph just in case they hit it big.

My first memory of ever being blown away by music was when I was about 6 years old. My dad put his big studio headphones on my head and hit play on Running with the Devil. I just kept playing and stopping and rewinding that intro.

Geesh, this year just keep getting worse and worse...RIP

Favorite Band in HS and College. Still in my top 3. Actually found myself tearing up watching the stupid news national news story about it.....Damn

he was first one for me to define guitar god

Ain't Talking Bout Love was my favorite. Amazing talent. Their albums always had a few great songs, and then a lot of filler. But that's true for most bands, even the great ones.

Wow. Guitar legend. Rock legend.

One of the most underrated songwriters of our time too...

The most significant impression and thing to me was that he always seemed to be so happy doing what he did. We can all aspire to excelling and being one of the all time best at something we truly love doing. I think that is what I liked most about him.

On the flip side, not happy with turning 50 and seeing idles on my youth dying. Getting old sucks.

Genius or not, he could have been a better human being if he wanted to...

I wanted to go see them in 2015 at the woodlands, but I was a sophomore at the time and the tickets were too expensive. The rumors of the tour started since last year and was hoping Eddie would get better (the cancer thing was known already) but this happened. Hope his family is ok.

Monsters of Rock show in '88 with Scorps, Metallica, Dokken and Kingdom Come.

Then again in the 90s when they played the last show at Convention Center Arena here in SA before it was demolished.

Favorite EVH solo? Hard to choose....but would have to go with Hot For Teacher.

Wow I can't believe this footage exists!! I remember when I was five years old and my Mom and Dad went to this very show and I cried because they wouldn't take me and left me with my grandparents to watch me for the evening and they were so excited when they got back from the concert.

Didn't know Eddie was there until just now. Crazy. RIP.

edit: I sent them this video and my Mom said she barely remembers the show but my Dad said he does very well and just found this. Said the button was about all they could afford at the time.

You can count me as one in mourning. A serious part of my high school and early college years was spent listening to Eddie VanHalen jammin on the guitar. I saw them 6 times live; 3 with David Lee Roth as vocalist: Women and Children First, Diver Down, and 1984 tours; and 3 with Sammy Hagar: 5150, OU812, and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge tours

Eddie VanHalen's guitar solo on Michael Jackson's Beat It was the ONLY reason I bought the Thriller album.

If you were going to build a guitarist in a lab, you would try to build Eddie Van Halen. No one sounds like that guy, period. I was born in 1980, I can certainly remember hearing plenty of VH songs growing up. It's hard to compare guitarists from different genres and ages, but I would imagine if you lined up every guitarist you could think of on a stage and they battled it out, who in their right mind is going to call out EVH? (Going through the Rolling Stone top 100 guitarists maybe SRV) If nothing else, he might be the guitar hero of every artist that was my hero growing up. From the songs, the technical ability, to the fact that I don't know if anyone had more fun on stage than that guy. 2020, it's just the worst.

Intro to Mean Street and then the bridge - how anyone can make a guitar sound like Godzilla is amazing.

Frequently overlooked is that he was also an innovative rhythm player. I still hear new stuff under the vocals when I listen to his work.

My go-to deep track is "Girl Gone Bad." The VH brothers were in lock step on that song.

they were definitely iconic in the 80's, and some of their songs stand the test of time really well.

For EVH fans, I thought this was fascinating insight into his genius.

The day before EVH died Rick Beato posted a video about what solos other guitarists would have played over Stairway to Heaven, and one of them is EVH. Crazy timing. It's a fun video and also features Texas guitar legend Eric Johnson.
