It's so perfectly divided into six episodes. With a bit more research, just adapt each one and have them be a little better-written in terms of the dialogue. But man, there are so many chill-inducing moments
My favorite is probably when Lucas first hears the score and calls Spielberg. Just great stuff, especially with headphones on.

this navel gazing is so f'ing depressing

If it's a good script that tells an entertaining story, what's the difference? There are dozens if not hundreds of fantastic books on the making of classic films. If a few those stories go onto to be movies themselves, tell an interesting/entertaining story, and we learn something about the filmmaking process/behind-the-scenes in the process, I just don't see the issue. Sure, there are bound to be a couple stinkers from this trend, but there could be some great movies as well. How/why is this any different from any other true story like, say, the The Social Network and the behind the scenes of the creation of Facebook?

Count me in the group that just has no interest in this genre.

I'm not saying I think they will suck or anything.. I just don't care.

And I can see how someone might think this is lazy. The very idea of making a movie about the making of a movie screams "we're out of ideas for movies". But there's also a deeper element as mentioned before about the hand shaking, luck, randomness, craziness, and all the moving pieces that can lead to there being a story that nobody might know about and might have all of the elements of an actual movie plot. But I personally don't really care about any of that as I'm not a Hollywood junkie, classic movie junkie, or documentary junkie.

I get when there is a story to tell. Like The disaster artist.

I hear you. But if Francis and the Godfather or The Long Goodbye come out - and happen to get fantastic reviews, are nominated for Oscars, etc - you're not going to watch them because you're "not a Hollywood junkie"? Personally, I don't care what a movie is about as much as I care if it's good or not. I'll literally watch anything on any subject if it's getting good enough reviews. I've never understood making blanket, arbitrary rules as to what kinds of movies I will/won't watch, based on subject matter. My *only* criteria is good/not good.

I don't want to know how they filmed the Raiders truck scene or what Spielberg had for breakfast that day or how surly Harrison Ford was on set in costume with the cameras off

just let it exist as magic and art, not craft

Probably not unless the wife puts it on or I happen upon it on tv when flipping channels and no sports are on. It's not a rule.. I'm just not AT ALL interested. Why would I watch something that doesn't interest me?

Again, these movies aren't really about the day-to-day filming of the movies. Like I said earlier, Francis and the Godfather, for instance, is mostly about how hard it was for Coppola to even get that movie in front of cameras in the first place. It's all about butting heads and heated arguments with the studio about who to cast or trying to convince the mob to allow a mob movie to film on mob-run streets. It's VERY much a "getting the team together to pull off the heist" type of vibe, with the "heist" finally being shooting the movie itself, which doesn't come until much later, and isn't the primary focus. There's nothing about these movies that's taking away from the "magic" of making movies. More than anything, it's simply compelling drama about underdogs with tangible goals, having to go up against the people and forces standing in their way.

It's just hard for me to relate, that's all. Because, ultimately, what interests me is what's good. I've never thought, "Oh, that subject matter doesn't interest me, so I won't see that movie, no matter how good the reviews and how many people I know recommend it." Like, a movie about two lesbians in 18th century France, that takes place at a single location, sounds utterly terrible to me on paper. But enough people raved about Portrait of a Lady on Fire that I finally gave it a shot, and ended up loving it. In other words, I completely understand being uninterested in something on paper. What I can't relate to is still refusing to give something a chance when there's near-universal praise for it.

i'm going to argue against myself and say i'd watch a movie about how John Milius made everything he touched better

We are definitely different.

I don't watch a lot of movies like you do. I watch a ton of sports, some tv series, a movie every now and then, and a handful of youtube channels. I'm rarely the guy flipping through dying to catch something new I haven't seen. I ignore about 75% of content that comes out. My preference is usually big budget sci-fi / fantasy and a small dose of comedy. When there isn't something in my wheelhouse, I'll play my sports video games or do stuff around the house / yard. Having a kid has also limited my entertainment consumption time.

Every now and then my wife will throw something on that I'll end up enjoying.

But there just isn't a bone in my body that's going to get excited, or go searching for something like any of these movies.

Just like you likely won't give the time of day to watch two random college basketball teams duke it out, but I would if it was on and nothing else was.

Gotcha, and that makes sense. And just FYI, I didn't mean to imply you were "doing it wrong" or anything like that. I was just trying to explain why it was hard for *me* to understand. But I can get the I'd-rather-watch-sports / I-have-other-interests angle.

No worries. I knew exactly where you were coming from and no offense was taken.

I'm a simpleton.

Here's a diagram to help..

I've found it to be something that isn't necessarily appealing on pitch, but when it is done well the movies ARE very interesting to watch.

Nic Cage would have been the perfect lead in Francis and the Godfather.
