I'm young, relative to the song, but I thought "Lunatic Fringe" was Pink Floyd until about last year.
I'm not young relative to the song, but the was the first song that came to mind. I thought it was The Floyd talking about Syd Barrett for the longest time.

I'm certainly not young but I don't know that I heard this song until I was in college. I swore it was Pink Floyd until someone told me it was Red Rider. WTF is Red Rider?

I'm glad I'm not the only one.
Red Rider was a band fronted by Tom "Life Is a Highway" Cochrane.

Both Red Rider and Tom Cochrane scored multiple hits - in Canada where they hail from - but hardly any crossed over to the US. Tom had a top 10 hit with Life is a Highway later redone by Rascal Flatts. Red Rider never had a top 40 hit in the US but a few like Lunatic Fringe were played on rock (AOR) stations. Lunatic Fringe picked up a lot of momentum and became a staple of classic rock based mostly on it's use in the movie Vision Quest which was several years after its release.

Not a song, but I thought Garth Brooks was a part of Brooks and Dunn until about 5 years ago.

Not so much a "wrong band" issue, but similar, every time I hear the beginning of Edge of Seventeen I think it's Eye of the Tiger. Then I get pissed when I realize it's not.

God help us when you learn it's bootylicious that's playing.

I thought for 20 years it was CCR. Nope. A British rock band.
Thought the same thing the first time I heard it. Think my dad corrected me when I asked.

In response to the OP, I thought Tomorrow by Silverchair was by Pearl Jam for the longest time

WOW, I am today years old finding out that Tom Cochrane was in Red Rider. The first concert I ever attended in my life was Pat Benatar with Red Rider opening up for her. I never knew it was Tom Cochrane signing Lunatic Fringe.

I downloaded a bunch of music off Napster when I was in middle school and just getting into music, but something went wrong. Every song I downloaded, irregardless of who actually performed it, had the artist listed as, "Creedence Clearwater Revival."

It took me years to figure out CCR wasn't the most talented and versatile band of all time.

Back in those days, there were tons of mislabeled songs.

Stuck in the middle was commonly labeled as Bob Dylan.

Yes. That and "Fightin Texas Aggie as REK instead of Dub Miller.

When I was at A&M, everyone thought it was Roger Creager

It wasn't until I watched the Cars get inducted into the Rock & Roll HOF when I found out that "Drive" was not sung by Ric Ocasek but bassist Benjamin Orr.

It just never dawned on me all this time that that wasn't Ocasek's voice. I just assumed it was because he was the lead singer.

Orr sang a lot of their best known songs: 'Let's Go', 'Just What I Needed', 'Moving in Stereo', 'Bye Bye Love', 'Candy-O' just to name a few.

To be fair, the only reason most folks really remember Moving In Stereo is a certain Fast Times scene
