Heroes by the Wallflowers
I'm not young relative to the song, but the was the first song that came to mind. I thought it was The Floyd talking about Syd Barrett for the longest time.redline248 said:

Red Rider was a band fronted by Tom "Life Is a Highway" Cochrane.Fuzzy Dunlop said:I'm certainly not young but I don't know that I heard this song until I was in college. I swore it was Pink Floyd until someone told me it was Red Rider. WTF is Red Rider?redline248 said:

Not so much a "wrong band" issue, but similar, every time I hear the beginning of Edge of Seventeen I think it's Eye of the Tiger. Then I get pissed when I realize it's not.
Thought the same thing the first time I heard it. Think my dad corrected me when I asked.CrottyKid said:

I thought for 20 years it was CCR. Nope. A British rock band.
WOW, I am today years old finding out that Tom Cochrane was in Red Rider. The first concert I ever attended in my life was Pat Benatar with Red Rider opening up for her. I never knew it was Tom Cochrane signing Lunatic Fringe.Ocean Of Funk said:Red Rider was a band fronted by Tom "Life Is a Highway" Cochrane.Fuzzy Dunlop said:I'm certainly not young but I don't know that I heard this song until I was in college. I downloaded a bunch of music off Napster when I was in middle school and just getting into music, but something went wrong. Every song I downloaded, irregardless of who actually performed it, had the artist listed as, "Creedence Clearwater Revival."
It took me years to figure out CCR wasn't the most talented and versatile band of all time.
Back in those days, there were tons of mislabeled songs.
Stuck in the middle was commonly labeled as Bob Dylan.
Yes. That and "Fightin Texas Aggie as REK instead of Dub Miller.

Orr sang a lot of their best known songs: 'Let's Go', 'Just What I Needed', 'Moving in Stereo', 'Bye Bye Love', 'Candy-O' just to name a few.GiveEmHellBill said:
It wasn't until I watched the Cars get inducted into the Rock & Roll HOF when I found out that "Drive" was not sung by Ric Ocasek but bassist Benjamin Orr.
It just never dawned on me all this time that that wasn't Ocasek's voice. I just assumed it was because he was the lead singer.

To be fair, the only reason most folks really remember Moving In Stereo is a certain Fast Times scenegggmann said:Orr sang a lot of their best known songs: 'Let's Go', 'Just What I Needed', 'Moving in Stereo', 'Bye Bye Love', 'Candy-O' just to name a few.GiveEmHellBill said:

I always thought Hurt was by NiN, but it turns out it was a Johnny Cash song.
