BusterAg got me thinking - see his thread about thinking "Don't Worry. Be Happy" was a Bob Marley song.

What songs did you think were someone else for the longest time????

I made fun of him for that one but I do have a confession myself.

For the longest time - until maybe 7-8 years ago - I thought that "Stuck in the Middle With You" was song by George Harrison.

I had never even heard of the band Stealers Wheel but I was familiar with Gerry Rafferty (his big solo stuff like Baker Street of course which sounds significantly different). Anytime Stuck in the Middle With You came on my mind just processed it as George Harrison. It wasn't until the more recent days of car radios displaying the artists name that I caught it and was like "WTH???"

Anyway listen to "Got My Mind Set On You" by George Harrison and you might see why I confused it. Similar sound. Similar voice. Or even "All Those Years Ago".

Anyone else got some embarrassing examples?

I'm young, relative to the song, but I thought "Lunatic Fringe" was Pink Floyd until about last year.

Tangentially related but I didn't realize Ed Sheeran is not actually Steve Zahn.

that's amazing.... i mean i never would have thought it but i was a teen of the 80s.

but i can see how with that title for sure, and even the eerie beginning could seem that way. the voice is very different but the echo factor also adds to a PF effect. and the soaring guitar solo could be, the background vocals definitely could be, even the siren sound effects

Very interesting.

Of course a lot of people thought the lyric was "Let me tell you friends" instead of "Lunatic Fringe" so plenty of confusion around the song.

Used to think this was the Beatles......Actually it's a Paul McCartney song anyway and he plays in the recording of it. Many of Bad Finger's songs sound like the Beatles.

As of about 3 years ago, I thought "The Boys Are Back In Town" was by Grand Funk Railroad. My brother-in-law corrected me over Thanksgiving dinner. When he told me it was Thin Lizzy, I then argued that Thin Lizzy was not from Ireland, but from Boston. Lastly, I incorrectly stated that the lead singer was still alive.

Once I realized it wasn't Floyd the vocals hit me right away and I felt ashamed.

Did you have the same confusion with "Silent Lucidity" from Queensryche? That one is very Floyd-esque.

I am less familiar with that one, and I can't say for certain. Listening to it right now, I will say it's possible if I was driving in the car that I would mistake it for Floyd.

Have a cigar by Pink Floyd. Never knew it wasn't Waters singing until I saw a documentary a couple of years ago.

I downloaded a bunch of music off Napster when I was in middle school and just getting into music, but something went wrong. Every song I downloaded, irregardless of who actually performed it, had the artist listed as, "Creedence Clearwater Revival."

It took me years to figure out CCR wasn't the most talented and versatile band of all time.

Back in those days, there were tons of mislabeled songs.

I'm certainly not young but I don't know that I heard this song until I was in college. I swore it was Pink Floyd until someone told me it was Red Rider. WTF is Red Rider?

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Not so much a "wrong band" issue, but similar, every time I hear the beginning of Edge of Seventeen I think it's Eye of the Tiger. Then I get pissed when I realize it's not.

At one point, I thought George Straight had a lot of hits. Didn't realize he covered all of them from songwriters.

When I was young I used to always get confused at the beginning of 'Spirit in the Sky', thinking it was "La Grange'.

I used to think 'Reelin' in the Years' by Steely Dan was Thin Lizzy. The verse vocal delivery sounded a lot like Phil Lynott.

I thought 'Lonely is the Night' by Billy Squier was Robert Plant.

When 'Plush' from STP first started playing on the radio I thought it was Pearl Jam. I think a lot of people did.
