Watching a teen movie on Amazon and one of the high school kids is played by 24 year old. This is a long trend in Hollywood. Why?

Because they can work longer hours and are generally more mature/professional.

would you pour millions of dollars into a production and have to rely on a bunch of teens to be professional?

And a lot of kid actors who are cute at a certain age get non-cute over time and then you've got an ugly kid stuck in a role that you can't do anything about.

I've been wondering how the prolonged break for Stranger Things will change those actors. Not really in terms of "cuteness", just in terms of looking drastically different than they did in the last season

There are a lot of different SAG rules for minors under 18 about how many hours they can work, you have to provide teachers, have parents on set, etc.
Plus their body is still changing as a teen, it would cause delays and continuity problems if they showed up to set with an acne breakout or a different voice.

The SAG rules were something I wondered about. I get the maturity and changing body issue.

Beyond all the above, someone in their 20s probably has a resume and name recognition you want more than someone who is in their teens unless they were a known child actor or a rare breakout star type.

Revenge of the Nerds was the worst for this. A bunch of guys in their 30s playing 18 year-olds.

Square Pegs was a show about high school kids that aired for one season in the early 80s and was the show that launched the careers of Sarah Jessica Parker and Jamie Gertz to name a few. It was cancelled suddenly after one season and many years later the producers say it was because the actors that were actual teens were uncontrollable on the set. They partied, did drugs, slept around with much older actors, and were completely unprofessional.

The best was Wet Hot Summer in 2015 with the original actors reprising their roles from 2001. Dome of them were in their 40s playing teenage camp counselors.

Gabrielle Carteris was 29 on the first season of 90210 in 1990 playing a 16-year-old. The actress will be 60 next year. Ian Ziering was 26 and Luke Perry (RIP) was 25.

Mila Kunis basically lied to get cast in That 70's show when she was 14. She said it wasn't until they went to sign the contract that she informed the studio that she wasn't emancipated and would need a teacher on set.

Only know that because this old Conan appearance popped as a related video or something to whatever I'd watched before:

Dang, they need to change her name from 11 to 34C. They are going to have to hide those on the show.

Wake me up when they make the 20 something Dora the Explorer. Dora with bigger boobs, midriff, and short shorts...she'll be like the new generation's Lara Croft lol.

This is what why I was thinking they cast 20 somethings for teenage rolls. It's less creepy to sexualize 20 somethings than actual high schoolers.
