Round 1:
Quote:

1. Goodfellas vs 8. Barry Lyndon
2. Taxi Driver vs 7. Spartacus
3. The Departed vs 6. Full Metal Jacket
4. Raging Bull vs 5. Eyes Wide Shut
5. The Wolf of Wall Street vs 4. Dr. Strangelove
6. The Aviator vs 3. A Clockwork Orange
7. The Irishman vs 2. 2001: A Space Odyssey
8. Casino vs 1. The Shining

Barry Lyndon should have been left off. Paths of Glory (or even Lolita) is a much more relevant film. Barry Lyndon is almost a niche movie. Even with those, Goodfellas gets the nod.

The only other one Scorcese even possibly gets the nod on is Raging Bull.

Wolf was a 3 hour movie with no depth. Entertaining, but not exactly breaking any ground.

yeah i mentioned the Scorsese inclusion of Casino vs. Gangs of NY. But either is gonna lose to The Shining.

Likewise yes I would have included Lolita and Paths of Glory over Barry Lyndon and Spartacus probably - but any of those 4 are losing to Goodfellas and Taxi Driver. imho.

Agreed on both counts.

And I think The Irishman is a great movie.

I thought it was mind-numbingly boring. Goodfellas is obviously epic. Casino is a little bit derivative of Goodfellas but still an enjoyable enough movie that you can ignore that.

The Irishman is so derivative of even his own work that it's a chore to make it through.

The Irishman vs 2001: the battle between two of the most boring movies ever made.

I beg to differ on 2001.

Probably, but not as much as Kubrick.

We've got two 51/49 matchups.

4-4 for me but IMO you left off Kubrick's best film, Paths of Glory. I get what Kubrick was attempting with Barry Lyndon, it is visually a beautiful film but it is still a snoozefest. It is one of those movies that films students love like Citizen Kane but the average movie goer does not get the praise it receives..

Personally I think Kubrick runs circles around Scorsese and I say that as a guy who likes them both but Kubrick is a much better director.

What is the criteria here, everyone's gut feel?

As enjoyment I'd pick Goodfellas over Barry Lyndon but for technical innovation BL was probably greater, even though Scorsese did some amazing scenes with the new technology of Steadicam in Goodfellas (the scene entering the Copacabana was awesome).

Yeah, pretty much up to each person to decide. You can go by what you enjoy more or whatever you feel is the "better movie". So basically yes, gut feeling.

Opinions are all over the place but I found it to be overall enjoyable enough for a watch. But I don't really find it to be a good movie, though I was just happy to see Joe Pesci on screen again.

You'll get 10 different answers from 10 different people. Personally, I loved it and it was awesome to finally see DeNiro, Pesci, and Pacino work together.

I suggest watching it if you enjoy Scorsese movies.

definitely worth seeing. not anyones "best" but all good. and the anti aging tech was pretty amazing.

Acting was top-notch.

I just didn't feel there was much of a story. Just a lot of meandering.

And that works if you're really invested in the characters, but the problem is Scorsese has done these characters so well so many times I feel like we've already been invested and divested in them in Goodfellas and Casino.

A fantastic first round, with a lot of votes and some extremely close wins. The results are split right down the middle.

Round 1 Results:

1. Goodfellas (99%) vs 8. Barry Lyndon (1%)
2. Taxi Driver (67%) vs 7. Spartacus(33%)
3. The Departed (51.5%) vs 6. Full Metal Jacket(48.5%)
4. Raging Bull (67%) vs 5. Eyes Wide Shut (33%)
5. The Wolf of Wall Street (48%) vs 4. Dr. Strangelove (52%)
6. The Aviator (43.8%) vs 3. A Clockwork Orange (56.3%)
7. The Irishman (20.4%) vs 2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (79.6%)
8. Casino (34.3) vs 1. The Shining (65.7%)

Disappointed to see Wolf of Wall Street get knocked out, especially after such a close vote. Was also hoping EWS might pull out an upset.

FMJ came within 3 votes of The Departed.

Round 2 coming shortly...

Kubrick 3:1... I absolutely adore Dr. Strangelove, but Goodfellas wins not just because of how good a movie it was and how well it was acted, but it was also in my opinion his best shot film.

Agree completely. Dr Strangelove is so great but I have to give Marty that one. Goodfellas was his best work and the movie is just magnificent.

Should it matter that Apatow produced a number of McKay's movies?

damn you!!!!!

Goodfellas vs DSL is just not fair.

I know Goodfellas is superior in every way but damn't....DSL: OHILTSWALTB is just pure maniacal dark comedy gold one of my biggest movie love affairs. Saw it when I was 13 and we first got cable TV and was just hooked. I didn't know adults could be so genuinely sarcastic about the absurdity of something so serious as the bomb and amid the cold war era it just was perfection. DSL and ACO and The Shining also on HBO around that time were my early intros to both Kubrick and Stephen King. I was hooked on both for life.

Alas....Goodfellas is top 5 all-time for me. Ugh.

But I'm still 2:2 on this round between titans. Maybe 3:1......I'm torn on TD vs ACO.

This was almost identical to my experience. Had never seen a movie with such sarcastic absurdity and was totally floored by it.

I joined an Independent Film Club in high school (Yes, I'm a nerd), and Dr Strangelove was the first movie we saw.

Loved it. "Gentlemen you can't fight in here, this is the war room!" is one of my all-time favorite quotes.

I read that as "Independent Fight Club" at first glance and thought, "Damn, Spilner's hard core."
