I'll watch this because why not but I'm going to guess the tornados will be an as yet defined F8+ on the scale and we will get a patronizing movie instead of just a fun, ridiculous movie.

I also thought Bill Paxton's choices in that movie between Helen Hunt and the other one was a no-win situation. He should have chosen neither and moved on.

I'm also pissed off that Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman are no longer with us.

I could be wrong, but Kosinski has never really seemed like the patronizing type. His movies are mostly serious, yes, but Tron Legacy had fun at times, Top Gun: Maverick looks to as well, and Only the Brave, though a depressing-as-hell ending, shows that Kosinski can deliver comradery and good-ol'-boy team spirit. I don't think this will match the charm of the original, but I don't think it's going to be preachy either. Kosinski has simply never seemed like that type of filmmaker. I think it'll be a different take for sure, and probably a slightly more serious tone, but he and Marshall are also smart enough to know what made the original work.

I haven't seen the original again, in full, in maybe 20 years? But it's currently in Netflix, so, given the news, I decided to give it a rewatch, and I highly recommend doing so. I'm only 20 minutes in, but I forgot so much of this. My favorite thing so far is that Jonas' Dorothy equivalent uses *square* sensors as opposed to Dorothy's sh*tty round sensors. Jonas can also open his Dorothy equivalent with a *remote* where as Jo actually has to push a button like a chump to open hers. The tech, the one-liners, the respective crews, etc... it's all so perfectly mid-'90s. I love it.

As for the reboot, yeah, there's no way they rehash this same plot. It has to be a completely new goal, with completely new tech, at this point. Off the top of my head, maybe they actually try to stop tornados somehow this time? Who knows...

when It came out on VHS we made fried steak and fried eggs while watching....Yeah its silly in places BUT man I bet my buddies and I saw that 5 times in the theater back in 1996. Had a lot going on that year and was a great escape.

There's absolutely no way Jo didn't attend every single Lilith Fair in the '90s. In fact, that's why she and Bill split, I'm sure of it. Bill simply couldn't handle her bi-curious-ness. You see, Twister isn't *just* another name for a tornado. Jo too finds herself in a storm of emotions, if you will - twisted - constantly pulled in both directions.

I can't believe I watched that whole thing. You know what, though? Despite the '90s cheese of it all, and some effects that don't hold up particularly well, it's actually a pretty great movie. Until the end, at least, as the literal running-from-the-tornado sequence is eye-rollingly stupid (beginning with the death of Jonas', who has to be the dumbest "smart" guy ever). But it's such an all around fun, energetic movie, with so many great, memorable beats, the story itself is better than I remembered, and the Jo-Bill-Dr. Reeves love triangle is surprisingly effective. Not to mention, the drive-in theater sequence, as unbelievable as it is that a tornado could just sneak up on them like that, is pretty incredible, with such a perfect look/vibe. If there's one thing this movie does right, it's that it *nails* the look and feel of that part of the country, which is basically where I grew up (in Wichita Falls, right next to Oklahoma/the Red River).

Anyway, this rewatch actually has me even more excited for the reboot, whatever it ends up being. If anything, I just want to return to this world again cinematically. After this viewing, I really do think there's a lot of potential in how they can approach a modern version, how much better the effects can be, etc. Consider me legit excited.

I had a crazy dream about the remake of this movie last night. It was the scene of the tornado hitting the drive in movie theater except this time it was an outdoor concert. Jami Gertz (Bill Paxton's ex-wife in the movie) was in the crowd. Jami Gertz was also Star in The Lost Boys. The person performing was none other than Tim Cappello and he was singing I Still Believe. The tornado was ripping through the crowd while he as doing the whole shirtless dancing saxophone playing thing he did in Lost Boys.

I have not watched this since it originally came out. Three things stick in my memory from it:

1) The overall plot with the stalking tornadoes was stupid
2) The special effects were fantastic at the time. The promotion clips and media rounds always showed the scene with the flying cow to discuss the special effects "wow factor"
3) The use of Deep Purple's Child in Time extended guitar solo was outstanding while they were driving around in one of the storm chasing sequences.

If they can tweak the plot to address point 1, a reboot could be a lot of fun with the special effects that are possible today.

This is my #1 favorite movie. I wanted to be a storm chaser when I was a kid before this came out, had all those video compilations of storm chaser videos, and then Twister came out and I was hooked.

I'm only in for the reboot if the story is some sort of Hurt Locker take on the types of people who do this. There is a good book about a tornado chaser where he slowly wades into it, and becomes addicted to the adrenaline of finding the right storm, tracking it, and the reward of the tornado. It has so many parallels to the themes from The Hurt Locker. Anyway, I know its probably going to be more of a summer popcorn flick, but there is some interesting character work, that the original touches on in some ways, that could be explore more....while having awesome special effects and a good sense of place.

If they were smart, they'd try to get Taylor Sheridan involved with the screenplay, IMO.

That would be awesome, and you might not be far off. Like I said, with Kosinski at the helm, I do think this will be a somewhat more serious take, while still trying to honor the spirit of the original in whatever ways they can. But yeah, a Hurt Locker version could be a cool angle. I love exploring the idea/theme of addiction in that way.

This dumbass movie is one of the many films on the summer of '96 that made me a movie nerd. Twister, Mission Impossible, Independence Day, and The Rock were like popcorn movie heroin for my 12-year-old brain. Even if all of those films are flawed in different ways, I'll always appreciate them for introducing me to how fun going to the movies and turning your brain off in the AC in a Texas summer can be.

In terms of Twister, it really is a bad movie that somehow works anyway. I think a lot of it is, even if the plot makes no damn sense, Jan De Bont can shoot the hell out of an action sequence.

Grew up in a relatively small community and had a 3rd grade teacher that was a dead ringer for Helen Hunt circa Twister hitting screens - haircut and everything.

Needless to say, all the Dads showed up at the teacher meetings that year. She even showed at our Little League games and the moms would get all pissed off - one of the more hilarious connections my Dad finally owned up to as I got older.
