nope

One of the main reasons this movie resonates with me so much is that it absolutely feels like a '90s/early-'00s David Fincher thriller (The Game, Panic Room, etc.), right down to the San Francisco setting. Whannell is certainly no Fincher, but the influence is unmistakable and he does his best...

Another thread, another aTmAg post making assumptions about a movie he has yet to see. Like clockwork.

For the record, where the plot ultimately goes in this thing is unguessable based on the trailer. As bonfarr said, there are so many more big scares, and then so many more twists and turns than the trailer even hints at.

I see nothing wrong with his post. Horror movies have a tendency to lay everything other than 1 obvious twist out in the trailers.

I loved the opening with the crashing waves showing the logos.

Forgot to mention that. The crashing wave title sequence was so cool and inventive.

In a vacuum, sure. But it's a whole thing with him. His is an endless schtick of assuming he knows more about a movie he hasn't seen than the people who have seen it. This is yet another iteration of that, just wrapped in a question.

I knew I was in for a good time with that attention to detail and theme.

I'd never even heard of this movie and got a text from my Mom two days ago that said "Oh My Gosh!! Go see this movie in XD PLEASE! Go and get ready to jump out of your seat. It's wicked and clever and creepy and scary and great".

I don't always see eye to eye with her on films so it's good to get some validation in this thread. Will certainly have to check it out now.

Are they the cheese kind where it's quiet an something loud suddenly happens? Or are they the good kind where the situation they are in makes you jump/gasp?

Just saw and agree with TC. On edge of my seat where I knew it was going to happen but they didn't over do the scare scenes and actually built up more suspense. Saw it with the avx sound and thought the sound was amazing. The sound seemed as important as the camera work. Having the pinpoint sound in the theater was awesome. I enjoyed and they did awesome with 7M budget. Amazing what they could have done with more.

Honestly? No.

They don't use jump scares. They use exceptional camera framing, silence and an ominous score to elevate the tension in scenes.

There are no scenes of a cat jumping out from behind something or any of that crap.

The big "holy ****" scene is completely surprising and is very shocking.

I watched the trailer and it looked dumb to me. surprised that it's getting this buzz. did they explain why she wouldn't have purchased an infrared camera to be able to see this guy and/or prove he's there to other people?

I said earlier that a handful of flour would have solved everything.

I don't want to watch the movie. I hate scary movies. I'm in the heart attack years.

I'm still curious though.

I wouldn't call this a scary movie, It is a good thriller but nothing but one or two jump scenes.

Yea it was fantastic the way he framed the shots with that eerie sense.

He did an interview recently and talked about how they're on a limited budget, so he looked to other low budget "horror' films and drew alot of inspiration from Paranormal Activity (which is most evident during the breakfast kitchen scene). How the camera just lingers on a setting and forces the viewer to analyze every aspect of what's on' screen.

He also talks about how the fun of all scary movies isnt the jump scares. Anyone can do that. The fun is in the tension. He talks about how he tried to create as much tension as possible and then walk the viewer back. Then create tension again, and walk it back. Teasing the anxiety.

I really really like this director.

I actually thought the score was the worst part of the film. I like the loud/jarring reverb (?) used sparingly, but I felt like Whannell kinda overdid it with scene after scene in the last 20-25 minutes of the film using it.

It was like a Chrisopher Nolan trailer on loop.

Great little thriller. The director definitely had some exceptional techniques and framing to ramp up the tension. Thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the restaurant scene
