It dropped today. I watched the first episode and I'm not sure if I like it yet. I love Zoe Kravitz in the lead but it kind of bugs me that some of the lines are ripped straight from the movie. A lot of the scenery looks very familiar, too. It makes me think about the movie instead of focusing on the series. Definitely going to keep watching though.

I've had a crush on Lisa Bonet since she was on Cosby.

I feel like the show is highlighting a form of mental and spiritual illness. I won't be watching it again. Reminds me of that "Girls" show on HBO. Not as bad as that show was but a similar vibe.

I was talking about the neurotic nature of the character and an inability to connect her behavior to her inability to keep a relationship. This is the same formula for Girls, Sex in the City, and any number of daytime soaps. I find them boring and the fact that Hollywood continually uses hereto and homo promiscuity as a plot device isn't interesting enough to be the only plot of the show.

And yes, I disapprove of the promiscuity, but a person can't very well help who they are attracted to and who they love. They can choose not to be promiscuous.

BTW, I flagged your ad hominem attack. I rarely do, but I will not stand to be called a homophobe because you can't come up with a comment on my opinion.

Care to point out some female driven shows that you watch and consider to be good? Sounds a bit like your issues are with independent female characters. I think your "promiscuity" claim falls a bit short when 50% of the leads in both Girls and Sex and the City were monogamous.

Please don't encourage him to post more on this thread. I'd like to keep it about High Fidelity.

Back on topic, my roommate from A&M wife (also an Aggie) has a bit part in one episode. So I guess I'll have to get Hulu for a month

Big Little Lies
Parks and Rec
The Fall
Penny Dreadful
The Killing
Homeland
Sharp Objects
Castle Rock
Game of Thrones (kind of)

I am not a homophobe or a masochist. I just don't think the show has a strong plot. The movie didn't have a strong plot either, but made up for it with a great cast and it was a fun movie. I didn't see that in the pilot. It did prompt me to learn about Darondo, so I appreciated that. Maybe it will get better.

Big cameo at the end of episode 3. And I'm really starting to love the Cherise character. She's hilarious. And Zoe Kravitz is fantastic.

I just watched episode 2. I liked it and it redeemed my first impressions. I like the music and there was more character development. She is a good actress and this role show her skills better than the one she had in Big Little Lies.

Pilot was fantastic. This could have gone sideways in a hundred different ways, and I never would have thought to redo such a classic as a TV series, but it feels like the perfect format. And yeah, Kravits is awesome as well. Definitely a side of her we haven't seen before. I'm wondering how the hell her character has such a big Brooklyn apartment, much less makes enough money as the owner of record store in this day and age, but whatever. It's worth it for the sets/music/conversations. Will knock out another couple episodes tonight after the three point and dunk contests. Got a really good feeling about this one.

What's a quick summary of what this show is about? Drama or comedy?

It's an adaptation of a hugely popular book and then the 2000 John Cusack movie of the same name, which is still pretty beloved in its own right...

Quote:

High Fidelity follows "the ultimate music fan, a record store owner (Zoe Kravitz) who's obsessed with pop culture and Top Five lists" in neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

It's basically a romantic dramedy about Kravitz's character, who tends to overthink her relationships and subsequent breakups, all expressed through her love of music. Fantastic soundtrack. Great supporting cast. Incredibly well done all around.

The movie was one of the few romantic comedies that mostly appealed to men and is from the male perspective. My wife then girlfriend and I saw it in theaters. Then I've watched it probably 20 times since then - any time it's on the cable guide I'm stopping down. So I'm very excited to watch the show and I'm calling out all the references and changes compared to the movie and my wife barely remembers it now.

But my wife is loving the show and I'm wondering if adding the female characters helps.

It's so weird how it feels exactly like the movie - even using many of the exact same lines/situations - but works so well in its own right. On paper, I would despise everything about this effort, but it absolutely wins you over without cheapening the movie in any way. I don't know that I've ever seen a "remake" like this where both the old and the new are equally good and compliment each other so well.

agreed and a great example is the Jack Black character turning into a large Black lady. A first glance I'm rolling my eyes and thinking there's no way this works but she's really ****ing funny in her own way and I'm laughing just as hard at the Michael Jackson scene as the Stevie Wonder scene from the movie.

Perfect example and so true. The second she came barging into the store the first time I was like, "Oh, no." But she wins you over pretty fast and now I kind of even love her character. And yeah, that Michael Jackson argument was great.

Btw, here are lists (with links) of every song from every episode, with their exact placement in the show. I'm only on episode three and have downloaded like five songs so far...

Thanks for that! I'm a big Durand Jones & The Indications fan. Was thrilled to hear them in episode 2.

I love the movie. So much so that I can't bring myself to watch the show. Even the splash page makes me wish John Cusack was in it and I was watching the movie.

This was tongue in cheek meant to point out the absurdity of making assumptions about someone's world view and biases based upon their preferences in entertainment television. It wasn't serious. Not questioning removing it, just clarifying.
