As individual movies, I think the new movies are all better than the prequels, but as a whole the new trilogy is far worse than the prequel trilogy. The prequels had a clear path from beginning to end. There is some terrible acting and bad dialog, but you can see the whole story from the to end. The new trilogy is all over the place. At first Rey's parents matter, then they don't, then they do again. Skywalker doesn't care about how lightsaber, then all of a sudden does, etc. There is nothing that really adds to the universe. All the set pieces are just reuses of things from the original. So, while the acting may be better, I think the prequels work far better as a trilogy.

the only ones worth a darn are

4 5 6 and Rogue One

Rogue One and The Mandalorian are the only good live-action SW projects to come out in the last 30 years.

Curious: do the contradictions disappear a little if you think of it as a two-parter only: Ep 7+Ep 9?

As for things adding to the universe --- the additions imo actually injure it--- StarKiller Base seems more elaborate than OT era tech (or is it?) ---- the First Order should not have greater weapons than the Galactic Republic-Empire (which is what the `Empire' was). It should look look more "coming from behind" in that sense ---- the Thrawn novels of Zahn are far more realistic in this sense what a reviving Empire might look like.

The other possibility is the First Order was just a section of Empire that NEVER did fall, never had to "reconstitute" in which case some of its weapons platforms would be expected to advance further and improve. But is that really conveyed?

How much rage could be channeled over the assassination of someone you hadn't seen in 10 years?

In principle I agree that your explanation is a plausible take on what Lucas was going for, but it just underscores what another poster brought up in that but focusing a whole movie on an 8 year old anakin only gave you 4 hours to tell a 6 hour story. So everything ends up feeling rushed as a result. In a perfect world, TPM is shortened to a ten minute lead in combined with the opening credit scroll that gives us the basics of what we need to know about prepubescent anakin.

From there we can launch the trilogy, no need for 2 hours of background on his childhood.

Also while I'm in the mood to rip on star wars, the endless need of Lucas to tie everything together is idiotic. Anakin builds c3po... seriously? And r2d2 remains a relevant astromech droid for 30 years? Just introduce new characters rather than shoehorn your previous ones into movies that shouldn't logically include them. In a supposedly vast galaxy, this really shrinks the world in a bad way. Same with Chewbaca encountering Yoda on Kashykk and having Jango Fett be Boba's dad, just dumb and not relevant to tell the story.

Most of us are in agreement that rogue one and the mandalorian are the best film/shows in the star wars universe and what they have in common is not trying to force characters that don't belong to coexist in an otherwise original setting.

(Edit: my ranting credentials is that I've read 20+ EU books, most notably the whole xwing series and corran horn books. Seriously when are we going to get a rogue squadron movie )
