Looks kinda interesting but hard to tell exactly the plot from the trailer. The movie is in old style black and white....which is oddly refreshing and will most likely help the storytelling

Whatever you do, don't call it a "horror" movie or the purists here will crucify you. But yeah, The Witch is phenomenal.

Don't know if I'll catch The Lighthouse in theaters, but definitely on streaming.

Horror is a defined and definable genre explained well in the book Monsters From the Id.

In effect, it is a counter-Enlightenment reaction, usually inadvertent. When I'm back on desktop, I can explain further.

And we need to be careful with cinematic labels.

Saw it yesterday and that **** was crazy. Big fan of Eggers' commitment to making sure accents/dialogue are period-specific.

Saw it this weekend and really enjoyed it. Knew what I was getting into, and wanted something creepy and atmospheric... Loved the way it was shot like an old German, expressionist film. Willem Defoe is incredible, and should easily get an Oscar nod.

I didn't really understand the ending, but I enjoyed reading some theories and thoughts on it. Seems like there's some Greek/Roman mythology metaphors at play.

Definitely a movie I'll think about. Wouldn't mind watching it again some time with subtitles.

I was a big fan! Defoe and Pattinson were great

Watched it last night and enjoyed it. While I thought The Witch was a very well-done period piece (despite being not at all scary), the pacing in The Lighthouse was significantly better -- though yes it is slow-burning.

Both Pattison and Dafoe were excellent, and I felt the symbolism and meaning was far more on point in this one than The Witch managed.

If you're looking for a great thriller or horror movie, this isn't it... But if you can appreciate two great actors and great cinematography and don't mind making your own interpretations of things, it's well worth the watch.

Finally got around to watching this one. Cinematography and Dafoe were excellent. What a bizarre movie. Only thing missing was a Dutch Rudder finish to the 2 dudes dancing scene.

Y'all have pretty much hit the nail on the head for me. Beautifully shot movie. Every scene was gorgeous and i really dug the aesthetic. Both actors really fed off of each other well, great performances when they were going back and forth with one another.

As for the story, that left a lot to be desired. I was really looking forward to seeing this because The Witch really effected me in a way. I enjoyed the hell out of it and I was hoping this would do the same. I didn't find this to be a thriller/horror at all. Decent into madness is the best way to describe it and it felt a lot like Mother! in that way. Although I enjoyed the ride in The Lighthouse much more, likely due to the cinematography and the actors performances.

But in the end, the story made it fall short for me.

Pretty much spot on here.

watched this last night on a recommendation from a friend who generally likes all the same kinds of movies I like. I really enjoyed it. I watched it at home, obviously, so I was able to watch with subtitles on - I feel that that definitely helped the enjoyability over those of you that saw it without them. the dialogue was super enjoyable - I loved all the crazy nautical / sailor jargon.

the "descent into madness" theme of the movie was reflected in the way the plot sort of came apart at the seams along with the minds of the characters until by the end, the whole thing was just a big crazy mess - but it worked.

absolutely recommended.
