The Sundays

Her voice was just so pure

Totally forgot about them. Such a great sound.

So this inspired me to createed a Pandora radio station with The Sundays. So far, it is that perfect timeframe (1990ish) to pick up later albums from New Order, Depeche Mode and The Cure toward the end of synth pop wra, and also include earlier albums from similar alternative 90's bands. Give it a try.
Well that is cool.

Awesome

Stone Roses

Tripping Daisy's guitarist overdosed, then the lead singer went on to form the Polyphonic Spree.

Tora Tora from Memphis. Started to get some play in '89 and into the early '90s. Sort of got lumped in with groups like Slaughter and Firehouse, then grunge did them in. They're actually back together and released an album this year called "*******s of Beale" (B@st@rds) that's definitely worth a listen.

Just saw collective soul last night, got me thinking how they seemed like they could have lasted a lot longer.

Granted, they had a ton of hits, but it was all from 94-99.. then that was about it. Seems with the kind of writing power Ed had, he'd have hits for a decade or more, especially with their crossover tendencies to AAA radio.

Would have stayed more mainstream if Ross hadnt started porking Ed's wife.

Silverchair - I am not sure if they continued to be a big deal elsewhere but here I would've thought they would be a more sustained act.

Jonathan Tyler & the Northern Lights. They were awesome on their first album, it must have been independently produced because it's almost impossible to find. They put on a great show and really seemed to be going somewhere, and then just disappeared.

Man I feel lucky then since I have their first 2 albums on my iTunes. Apparently he had a big alcohol problem and ended up going to rehab out in LA for awhile

They've still got a huge following here in Florida, and run the original rock-n-roll cruise (The Rock Boat). They've had a bit of a renaissance recently by going a bit more country.

What's really amazing about them, though, is that they've had the exact same lineup the entire time. It's still the same five guys (plus a keyboard player they added a few years ago) that were on "All For You" back in the mid-90s.

I liked them when they were the O-ned-ers but felt like that they tried to go big time when they changed it to the O-need-ers.

They had 5 #1 albums in Australia, the last being around '07 or '08.

The Killer Bees (really thought they would make it huge)
Halloween night, 1987, three underage small town kids hit Sixth Street in Austin to visit one's older cousin. After many laps around the blocked off street and many mind erasers at cousin's private party at Cedar Street, we are told to meet cousin later at a party in the hills, address unknown.

We set off later with only a general idea of direction and no map, but somehow find the party. We go inside and there is a jammin' Reggae band playing in the dining room. Name of the band -- The Killer Bees.

I see Puddle of Mudd mentioned and can't help but laugh. Their live show is awful. There's a reason they never made it huge.
They were absolutely horrible at first. They did get a lot better after touring a while. They opened for Sevendust one night, and were awful. Then I think they opened for Staind later, and were much better.

Two prog bands in Europe:
Porcupine Tree (Steven Wilson is doing lots of good solo work, but everybody wants PT. Too much crap radio in the US so prog rock will never make it big here).
Riverside (Another great European prog rock band that lost their guitar star in untimely death. Could have easily have made it big.)
Any prog rock band- US radio markets just never let this happen.

The vast majority of people, even smart people, cannot comprehend and let themselves experiment with songs that aren't traditional verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus.

Prog will never be popular. Ever. We've dumbed our culture down to thinking that spoken and mumbled words over simple beats is music. And that hand claps and lyrics about fishing are good country. And that a good catchy riff is the most important factor in a rock song. We idolize complete idiots and push anyone away who is remotely close to rock music unless they do something catchy enough to appease our ignorant and simple minds. That's why people like indie music so much now. It's still simple, but it's at least creative.

If prog had any chance of popularity, it would have taken off in the 70's and 80's to mainstream success. But instead, we decided crap like AC/DC was what was good.

And to be fair, the majority of people care about vocals. Good vocals. The majority of prog has average vocals at best.. and even the technically good ones aren't overly enjoyable to listen to when you can choose to listen to Rivers from Weezer ramble about nonsense instead.

Orson... They were an LA band with a Texan lead singer that had a couple of songs on the UK charts.

Recently they've helped produced songs for quite a few british pop artists

The Mavericks. Guess they weren't country enough and not edgy enough for alternative.

I'm also surprised that Garbage isn't more popular than they already are, but I understand they are making new music. I guess when your band is a side gig/hobby it takes backstage to convenience.

Maybe they will yet get big, but Grouplove. I like a lot of their tunes, but I'm surprised they're not bigger than what they are. I saw them a few years back at House of Blues. Still playing small venues.

I like them. I've seen them at a few festivals (2012-14 era) and they were very fun live, but I dont ever see them taking the "next step".
If they are the 2nd or 3rd on a bill with a headliner I like, that's a show I'm getting there to see them though.

Good one! I've seen hundreds of live concerts, the best one I've ever seen? Maybe The Mavericks. They are so much more than Country. You can't really classify what they do, but it's damn good.

I agree 100%. I've always been a Mavericks fan, but was completely blown away when I finally saw them live 3 or 4 years ago.
