Two prog bands in Europe:
Porcupine Tree (Steven Wilson is doing lots of good solo work, but everybody wants PT. Too much crap radio in the US so prog rock will never make it big here).
Riverside (Another great European prog rock band that lost their guitar star in untimely death. Could have easily have made it big.)
Any prog rock band- US radio markets just never let this happen.
The vast majority of people, even smart people, cannot comprehend and let themselves experiment with songs that aren't traditional verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus.
Prog will never be popular. Ever. We've dumbed our culture down to thinking that spoken and mumbled words over simple beats is music. And that hand claps and lyrics about fishing are good country. And that a good catchy riff is the most important factor in a rock song. We idolize complete idiots and push anyone away who is remotely close to rock music unless they do something catchy enough to appease our ignorant and simple minds. That's why people like indie music so much now. It's still simple, but it's at least creative.
If prog had any chance of popularity, it would have taken off in the 70's and 80's to mainstream success. But instead, we decided crap like AC/DC was what was good.
And to be fair, the majority of people care about vocals. Good vocals. The majority of prog has average vocals at best.. and even the technically good ones aren't overly enjoyable to listen to when you can choose to listen to Rivers from Weezer ramble about nonsense instead.
